Do you remember the first time you made something? And can you recall how satisfied or proud you felt? From the colorful pictures that earned their place on family fridges to the first rolls of film we put through a camera, our earliest creative pursuits tend to stay with us, and all the little nuances and memories of where we’ve come from can often inform who we become and where we’re heading.

Together with photo- and video-editing app VSCO, we’ve been thinking about the adventures that creativity can take you on and the things it can teach you about your own identity. It’s in this spirit of curiosity and self-discovery that we’re asking the question: This year, what will making make you?

We caught up with three artists from across the globe to find out just that. Here, they reflect on the formative moments of inspiration that have shaped them into who they are today, describe the power of making art for the pure joy of it, and give us the tips we need to set out on our own creative journeys.

Laurence Philomene, Photographer, Montreal

Growing up as a queer kid in Montreal, Canada, Laurence Philomene looked to the vibrant artistic communities online for inspiration and connection. “We’d log on after school and spend evenings chatting about photography, films, and coming up with new ideas,” they recall. “When I was 13, I became obsessed with a group of photographers taking pictures of vintage Blythe dolls, and I started collecting and photographing them myself.” Over time, photographing dolls gave way to photographing friends and Philomene themself. Now, Philomene takes daily self-portraits for a project called Puberty, documenting their experience on hormone replacement therapy. “When I first started my transition I felt scared to talk about it online, but once I did it was liberating,” Philomene remembers. “I get feedback that it’s really helpful for others to see the things that I’m going through, and that’s what it’s all about. The whole point of my work is to humanize trans existence, because even though our existence is marginalized, at the end of the day, we’re all human and our day-to-day looks no different.” Philomene has decided to extend the project into 2020, hoping to see it flourish into published and performance-based iterations, too.

Philomene’s self-portraits catalog the slowness of transition, capturing the beauty in the little details of daily life: brushing their teeth, eating breakfast, and watching films in bed, sometimes using different colored bulbs in their bedroom to illuminate the most ordinary moments into atmospheric scenes. “It’s documentary, but it also plays with the line between what is and isn’t staged.” Sometimes Philomene will grab their camera to set up or recreate a moment; other times they just let the day unfold and see what happens. After all, inspiration often comes from the places you know most intimately. “My favorite place to take pictures is my home. I have my studio there, and it gets the most beautiful daylight, even on the cloudiest of days,” Philomene tells us.

I want us to be able to relate to each other more, and photography is a really powerful tool for that.

Their photography style is simple, colorful, and intimate. “I have a VSCO membership, so I have access to all of its presets (filters). I use my favorites to edit all of my photos, and I play with saturation and contrast a lot. I’ve been putting a selection of the images on my VSCO, too, using it as a dedicated, curated space to show people that project and see how it’s working together.”

A real emotional investment goes into making socially engaged work; when asked what needs to change in the way our societies represent trans and gender nonconforming people, Philomene says: “I think in general there’s a lot of fear regarding otherness in our societies, and that fear often leads to violence, especially for trans people and gender nonconforming people of color. A lot of what my work stands for is destroying that sense of fear and fostering a sense of community. I want us to be able to relate to each other more, and photography is a really powerful tool for that.” Creativity is a universal language, and art can tap into shared experiences in the most poignant ways. For Philomene, a creative life has also offered a chance to shape their own path. “I have a chronic kidney disease, and because of that, my energy levels fluctuate a lot. Being able to make a living from my art means I can shape my days however I want. I can listen to my body more, which has been really special to me.”

Maintaining a balance between creating for yourself and creating with an audience in mind can be tricky, but Philomene says: “I don’t post as I shoot things; I’ll often hold on to images just for myself for a while.” That way, things stay sacred and personal. A good way to get started on a creative journey, they say, is to ask yourself these three questions: What do I feel is missing? What kind of art do I want to see in the world? And what story is mine to tell? Everything will fall into place from there.

Theresa Baxter, Illustrator, Los Angeles

“For me, making art has always been the way I make sense of my feelings or the larger ideas I’m trying to grapple with,” says Theresa Baxter. “If I’m curious about something then I’ll follow that impulse, throw myself at it, and see where it takes me.” Baxter’s the-world-is-your-oyster outlook might have something to do with her childhood, spent moving around a lot as the only child of a young single mother. “It was always the two of us against the world,” she remembers warmly, “and having this strong feminine role model is absolutely reflected in the work I make now. She taught me how powerful women are and how we have to channel that outwards.”

Baxter’s digital illustrations are worlds within worlds — gorgeous, colorful, celestial scenes filled with pink skies and moons and bathing female nudes. “I’ve always liked to draw very normal, human things and then elevate them into this astral, fantastical universe,” she says. “I drew when I was looking for comfort or a place to make my own, and I’ve realized as an adult that this still helps me handle upheaval and transition.”

Her journey into professional art-making was a winding one, and she traced a path through art therapy and psychology before getting to where she is today. She attended art school, but something about it seemed to suck all the joy out of creating; for a time she stopped making work altogether. It was only when she began to reflect on how sharing her work online had the power to touch other people that she turned her attention back toward it.

I stand for body neutrality, portraying bodies as they look, and championing ourselves just as we are.

Early in her career, she made a network of friends in body-positive communities across the internet and started asking women who were proud of their bodies to send her nudes she could draw for practice. Responses flooded her inbox. “I got everything from professional shots to mirror selfies from women with a whole gamut of bodies, and it was the most amazing thing,” she says. “I’ve struggled with body image my entire life, and just talking about it on the internet has changed everything for me. I only started making art the way I do because of these women.” Making has made her more self-confident, and having people respond is what empowers her to continue. “I stand for body neutrality, portraying bodies as they look, and championing ourselves just as we are.” Her illustrations are a lesson for us all in self-love — an ode to doing, and being, whatever makes you happy.

Take pictures, write everything down, save it for later, Baxter says, because inspiration can come from anywhere. “When it comes to designing for apparel, I spend a lot of time thrifting — I love going through silly vintage tees. I take pictures of designs that speak to me and write endless one-word notes on my phone when ideas strike. I make sure to consume art and design as a leisurely activity, because so much of our inspiration and creative process happen when we aren’t looking at our thoughts. And I keep mood boards of everything and anything that gets me excited.” She’ll often sit and edit images in VSCO for the pure joy of seeing what they look like. “I love to document my friends and the places I love, but because I’m an obsessive creative, I want those memories to look and feel the way they did at the time.”

Her big focus for 2020 is her online shop, which she’s just relaunched. It’s a passion project, and she’s been featuring herself and her friends as models and using VSCO to edit the photos. “I did it all myself and didn’t ask for anyone’s opinion this time. I just said ‘I want it all to be pink’ and I went for it.”

Yuki Sazu, Artist, London

Yuki Sazu spent her early years in Japan before relocating to the U.K. as a child, and she’s always had a creative spirit. She’s worked with brands, started a magazine, and created her own clothing. Her use of different media, like photography or collage or textiles, is instinctual based on what she feels is the most effective way to put across the images and ideas she has in her head.

She started taking self-portraits around 18 months ago, sporadically at first. “My style is very DIY and esoteric,” she explains. There’s a velvety quality to a lot of her pictures. She edits them with VSCO and posts them on social media, sometimes accompanied by little slices of text detailing how she’s feeling or what she’s thinking about that day. “I use a lot of the editing tools to play around with the contrast, brightness, and saturation, and I also love how you can use the app to really experiment with color and play around with the spectrum of different reds and yellows and greens.”

Sazu’s images weave together color and emotion in beautifully subtle ways. In some of her photographs, she stages herself as archetypes like a bride or an archangel; in others she documents personal moments, like herself crying. “I think it’s really important to explore your vulnerabilities in general,” she says, “and doing that in front of the camera can be a really strange experience. It’s so much easier to be private and not share.” But where would the fun be in that? It’s something she continues to tease out through the daily process of taking pictures. “Making has made me healthier because it’s provided an important outlet for me to understand myself. It’s a therapy and a source of energy for me. I couldn’t imagine not being able to instill this as part of my routine.” For anyone planning to embark on their own creative journey, she says the most important thing is to “accept yourself and then use that as a starting point” — art is free expression and everything else will fall into place from there.

A lot of Sazu’s opportunities and relationships have formed through her social media presence. Online communities have been such a huge thing for her because “no one can create work in a vacuum,” she says. Digital platforms allow for infinite connection and inspiration at your fingertips, which can be amazing and overwhelming in equal measure. For those wanting to get making and sharing their work, she says, the key to maintaining a healthy relationship with your online self is remembering you don’t have to share everything. Take a step back to recalibrate from time to time — Sazu did and it worked wonders. “Now, when I post I try not to let myself think about a photo’s subsequent life online. I put images out, and if someone sees them or is moved then great, but I’m making them predominantly for myself.”

Making has made me healthier. It’s a therapy and a source of energy for me.

Taking time out to write a daily journal has been her biggest inspiration for the past year and has fed into the way she sees her practice as an extension of herself. “The closer I feel to my work, the more genuine it feels, so it always has to do with what’s happening in my life at the time. I think I make work the same way I experience emotions — it takes time to look back over everything and figure out what you’ve learned and how that might inform what you do next.” Her place of inspiration is transient, showing that the best ideas often come to us on the move. “I carry my notebook with me everywhere I go, and I love long train or car journeys that give me the time to let my mind wander.” Sometimes, all you need to do is throw on a jacket and head out into the world to find inspiration.

The Perfect Place To Go On Your Next Couples Vacation

Couples' getaways can be wonderful and romantic but spending multiple days in a row together in a new place can also put a relationship to the test

It makes sense. Travel is stressful (hello, TSA lines). It often requires compromise. You each may have certain expectations of how the trip should go. You also might be getting less alone time than you're used to. All of those factors have a way of highlighting incompatibilities you may have never noticed before.

The key to actually enjoying your vacation-for-two starts with picking the right spot for your trip, says Jim Augerinos, president and luxury travel consultant at Perfect Honeymoons

In Augerinos's experience, the most successful trips are typically to places neither partner has been before, but aren't too difficult to get to. That maximizes your chances for bonding (because your'e both having the same, new experiences), while minimizing travel stress. And yes, it needs that certain je ne sais quoi that will highlight your warm fuzzy feelings for each other.

Another tip from Augerinos: “Choose a destination that appeals to each person," he suggests. "It's not fair to go on a golf getaway if one person isn’t into golfing. Don’t cater to just one person’s interests.”

Given these guidelines, every couple's perfect getaway will be unique to where they live and what they love. But if you're not sure where to start with planning, these destinations offer a great jumping off point.

Los Angeles, California

Where to stay: Malibu Beach Inn
This picturesque seaside haven has chic lounge chairs right outside its back doors, so you can enjoy the balmy weather together with your toes in the sand. Book a room with a balcony view of the Pacific Ocean. (Rooms from $555 a night.)

What to do: Start off your day with homemade granola at RepubliqueL.A. Magazine called it the city’s best. If you’re the outdoorsy types, try a hike in the Runyon Canyon Park Trails. Parasailing in Santa Monica (about a 20-minute drive from the hotel) makes an unforgettable date. End the day of adventure at the farm-to-table Malibu Farm restaurant, which is located at the end of a pier and serves up dishes like vegetable paella and lobster mac and cheese.
Hudson Valley, New York

Where to stay: Collective Retreats
Take "glamping" to the next level on a picturesque organic farm. Each tent is outfitted with real beds made with 1,500 thread-count linens and cozy down comforters. There's also electricity and private bathrooms with rain-style showers. (Tents from around $399 a night.)

What to do: Head to Balloon NY for a scenic hot air balloon ride. Heights not your thing? Hudson has several stylish boutiques and shops. Plus, the Collective Retreats crew can help you plan out the outdoor adventures of your dreams, including activities such as kayaking, paddle-boarding, and fly fishing.

Savannah, Georgia

Where to stay: The Perry Lane Hotel
This luxe property is especially great for couples. The staff will set you and your partner up with a picnic basket complete with gourmet food and fresh flowers to take to a nearby local park together. (Rooms from $179 per night in winter and $228 per night in the spring and summer.)

What to do: Check out nearby Little Tybee Island, where you can go kayaking, try wind surfing, or just lounge on the beach. The Flying Monk Noodle Bar is a must-visit (we recommend their Na Na Noodles with shrimp). Or check out the fast-casual, South African-inspired sandwich shop, Zunzi’s, where the line is often down the block in the summer. Be sure to ask for an extra splash of their addictive special sauce.

Turks & Caicos

Where to Stay:
The Shore Club
This luxe, romantic property is on the less-developed side of the island, where you can find peace, quiet, and intimacy. But because Turks & Caicos is fairly easy to navigate, you'll still be within easy reach of all the excitement. Plus, the trip is only 90 minutes from Miami by plane, so travel time won’t eat up a substantial chunk of your trip. (Rooms from about $450 a night.)

What to do: Turks & Caicos is all about the beach. Augerinos says the water is as blue as you’ll find in the Caribbean. When you need a snack break, try Coco Van. This food truck is an extension of the popular (and nearly impossible to get into) restaurant Coco Bistro, which is the most famous on the island. But this recommendation isn't a consolation prize. “The food truck is way more casual and the menu is more whimsical,” Augerinos says.Photo: Getty Images.

New York, New York

Where to stay:
1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge
This property was designed with sustainability in mind (think: room keys made of recycled wood instead of plastic and plants everywhere), and has a killer skyline view of Manhattan. Plus, the hotel offers special experiences for two. On Valentine’s Day, for instance, the staff will set you and your love up with a private, in-room astrology reading and sound bath — plus a 50-minute facial, a 25-minute sugar scrub, and a reflexology treatment. Still not sold? The'll add chocolate heart-shaped macaroons to sweeten the deal. (Rooms from $349 in the low season and $549 during the high season.)

What to do: Start your day with a classic cup of joe from Birch Coffee, or breakfast at Augustine, a popular French brasserie that offers delicious beignets. If the weather is nice, hit the streets for a romantic morning walk across the Brooklyn Bridge or, a little farther uptown, through Central Park. Grab lunch at the famous Halal Guys food truck, check out The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and end the day clinking drinks and enjoying the views at BarSixtyFive at the Rainbow Room.

If you’re still going around 11 p.m. or midnight, head to the Empire State Building. It's a little-known secret that the roof deck is open until 2 a.m. A late-night visit offers amazing views of the lit-up NYC skyline, and you’ll skip the insane lines that plague the iconic building during the day. Remember, it’s the city that never sleeps, so you and your S.O. will have plenty of time to pack it all in.

Newmarket on Fergus, Ireland

Where to stay:
Dromoland Castle
If you’re going for Downton Abbey vibes, this idyllic and memorable property is for you. It’s been around since the 16th century, which is evident in its regal hallways, roaring fireplaces, and walled garden. (Don’t worry, it has plenty of modern amenities too.) Plus, the castle is just 10 minutes from the airport, so you’ll waste no time once you land. (Rooms from about $344 a night.)

What to do: On this trip, you have every excuse to never leave your hotel. The property has a spa, a golf course, and a mouth-watering tasting menu at The Earl of Thomond restaurant. If you’re into it, you can also go on horse rides, or visit the castle’s falconry school to get up close and personal with falcons, hawks, and owls. But if you're eager to sightsee too, rent a car; you’re an hour’s drive from the stunning Cliffs of Moher.Photo: Getty Images.

Canyon Point, Utah

Where to stay:
Amangiri
If you and your boo are eager to unwind, look no further than this secluded hideaway. The surroundings are otherworldly, with beautiful buildings set amongst gorgeous red rock canyons. Stay in cozy pavilions, and enjoy indulgent spa treatments, and Pilates and yoga classes. (Rooms from $1,550 per night in February.)

What to do: Take a break from the spa for an outdoor adventure out West, which the Amangiri staff will help you plan. The resort is within driving distance of the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and Monument Valley Tribal Park, home of the Navajo Nation. Other on-site adventures for nature junkies include hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, and boating on Lake Powell.

Denver, Colorado

Where to stay:
The Maven
This kitschy hotel is full of more than 700 eye-catching pieces of art, plus it has urban patios and luxurious round soaker tubs in the rooms. It's conveniently located in the heart of the popular LoDo neighborhood (short for lower downtown). You're one block away from both Coors Field, where you can watch baseball from the stadium's rooftop bar, and Denver Union Station, which is filled with cute shops and restaurants. (Rooms from $209 a night.)

What to do: If you go in the summer, you can catch a Colorado Rockies game, then grab a cone at Little Man Ice Cream. The old-timey bookstore Tattered Cover is worth a visit too. Then share plates at the Asian fusion hot spot Linger, where we suggest ordering the Korean Fried Chicken Bao Buns.

And of course, don't forget to pack your hiking boots. Saint Mary’s Glacier is about an hour's drive away. There, you'll find trails suited for moderate to intermediate trekkers. Or drive 40 minutes to Red Rocks, where you can check out the amphitheater — a geological wonder that has a theater built into three-hundred-foot rock monoliths where they hosts concerts, yoga, and other events — and do some hiking or biking in the surrounding park.

Day One

4:30 a.m. — T.’s alarm goes off and I burrow deeper into my duvet cocoon. He kisses the lump where my head should be and heads out for a run. T. has an ultramarathon in a few months and has jumped into training mode right in the middle of winter in Boston. I’ll never understand the appeal, but I can respect it (and the extra bed space).

6 a.m. — I slide out of bed to find my coffee waiting for me in a travel mug and T. in full study mode at the kitchen table with the pup at his feet. I pull on several layers of oversized sweat pants until I look like the Michelin man and the pup, C. (she gets her own initial!), and I roll out the door. I use the coffee as a hand warmer while we take a lap around the block and she does her business (check her emails, see how many meetings she has today, the usual dog stuff).

7 a.m. — There’s oatmeal with apples and cinnamon when we get back up to the apartment and it smells fantastic. T. and I have breakfast while talking about logistics for the next few days. T. is doing two Master’s programs simultaneously and my head spins just thinking of all the things he’s crammed into his schedule. He is honestly the energizer bunny in human form. T. loads the dishwasher and plays with C. while I make myself presentable for outside. I remember my lunch and head out to the T station (paid for with my pre-tax monthly transit pass).

8:30 a.m. — I really enjoyed freelancing and everything that I learned from it, but when we moved across the country last year I knew that I would want to work in an office again to feel like I was making an effort to put roots down (and also to force me to get out of the house and into real pants). It took a little while for me to find my current job, and I’ve only been here a few months, but so far I’m loving my new position. When I get to the office I peel off my outer layers and make some free office tea before sitting down and confronting my Monday morning inbox. T. is on campus and gets the first of what is going to be many many coffees. $2

10:30 a.m. — I fight my way through a good number of emails. Another editor asks if I’d like to take a walk and get coffee and I agree. She started at this job around the same time I did, and I am (lovingly) trying to push my inner loner introvert aside to try to make friends in Boston. We take the stairs down to the coffee kiosk in the lobby and I get a latte ($3). She shows me pictures of her dog and we exchange numbers for future potential doggie get-togethers. T. gets another coffee and buys one for a classmate ($4). $7

12:30 p.m. — I get so caught up in brainstorming and discussing new ideas with some of my authors that my stomach lets out a very loud rumble to remind me where my priorities should be. I heat up the roast vegetables and Italian sausage I brought from home and scroll through social media while I eat. I decide to stretch my legs a bit and head up to another floor to refill my water bottle. T. gets lunch and another coffee. He rarely brings food from home during the week because it’s a lot to lug around campus all day. $12.50

2:30 p.m. — I get off an hour and a half long conference call with my boss and colleagues at our office in a different city. We’re attending an out-of-state conference in a few weeks and I might have to fly first to DC and then to the conference from there, but I really hope not. I have some desk walnuts from my stash and go on another quick walk for water to avoid falling asleep at my desk. T. buys a six-pack of running socks and some energy gels ($35.90), and yet another coffee ($2). $37.90

4 p.m. — Our company has a flexible in/out policy and I’m done for the day. I take the T home and listen to the American Girls podcast on the way. I’m super behind on episodes, but this podcast is everything that my nine-year-old, overall-wearing self didn’t know she needed. C. and I load up in the car when I get home and head out to our volunteer site. We recently got certified as a volunteer therapy dog/handler team (something I’ve been wanting to do for ages) and we go to an after school program once or twice a week. My heart melts and my ovaries explode (in the best way possible) every time I see C. interact with the kids.

6:30 p.m. — We stop to fill up on gas on our way home ($37.59), where T. is waiting with his specialty — grilled cheese and tomato soup. We have The It Crowd on as background noise while T. preps for tomorrow and I put the dishes away. He takes C. out for her nightly constitutional while I shower and urge my skin to soak up all the dermatologist-approved moisturizer I lovingly slather on it. Winter eczema is no joke. $37.59

9 p.m. — In bed with our noses buried in our respective reading. Cuddles and we’re fast asleep by 10.

Daily Total: $96.99

Day Two

4:30 a.m. — Today’s a rest day but T. gets up with his alarm and goes into the living room to do some studying.

6 a.m. — T. is gone by the time I get up since he has an early meeting in another town, but my coffee and a little note are waiting on the counter. I zip up and C. and I brace ourselves for the cold. After we run back upstairs, I make a breakfast bagel with spinach and turkey, but I’m feeling uninspired for lunch so I dump a bunch of things together to make a “hot mess” salad. T. stops at Starbucks and gets a breakfast sandwich and coffee. $6.98

8:30 a.m. — I peel off my layers (anyone else always overheat while on public transport, no matter the season?), make some tea, grab a maple bar that someone brought (yay!), and settle in for email time.

11 a.m. — I refresh my tea and have a meeting with one of the graphic designers. We go over layouts and then spend a bit of time chatting. Like me, she’s also a recent transplant originally from a warmer climate. I’m glad to know that the winters (supposedly) get easier. Back at my desk, I place a grocery pick up order for T. to get on his way back into the city (cold cuts, cheese, veggies, fruit, pasta, laundry detergent, snacks, bread, eggs, yogurt, peanut butter, etc.). $89.87

12:15 p.m. — I drizzle the hot mess salad with the olive oil and vinegar I keep in my desk for this purpose (thanks for the tip Bon Appetit), and thumb through my internet feeds while I eat. The dog walker texts us pictures of our girl out and about, super cute. I head up to refill my water bottle and get some blood moving before parking myself back in my seat. T. gets lunch and a cup of his drug of choice. $12.78

4 p.m. — Packing up and heading out. I get off one stop early and walk the rest of the way home because the sun is out momentarily and I intend to enjoy it. I change into yoga pants and do a Pilates video on YouTube, then organize the groceries T. picked up. T. makes a bunch of copies at the library. $1.75

6 p.m. — Lately I’ve been trying to expand my collection of fallback recipes and set myself a goal of making one recipe a week that I would drool over online but wouldn’t ordinarily attempt to make myself. This week is NYT’s green puttanesca and I’m very pleased with how it turns out (team anchovy forever). I put on a ’70s disco playlist while I cook and shake my groove thing. T. joins in when he gets home. We’re both terrible, awkward dancers, but at least we can dance terribly and awkwardly together.

8:30 p.m. — T. loads the dishwasher and hunkers down to study while I take C. out and shower, which takes longer today because dry shampoo can only do so much for so long. If I could trade a large amount of money for the ability to snap my fingers and have my hair dry and cowlick free in an instant, I would do it in a heartbeat. Until then I will be handcuffed to my hairdryer. I crawl in bed and read for a bit before falling asleep, and T. comes in a bit later.

Daily Total: $111.38

Day Three

4:30 a.m. — T. gets up to go for a run and I do my part by rolling over and taking up most of the bed.

6:30 a.m. — I sleep in a bit because T. is on pup duty this morning. I make oatmeal with blueberries while I sip the coffee he left on the counter and we have breakfast together when they get back. T. has a seminar and a networking event tonight so he won’t be back until late. We get ready for our days and I pack up the extra puttanesca and a tangerine for lunch. I listen to an episode of the Write or Die podcast on the way to work.

8:30 a.m. — I treat myself to a caramel cappuccino from the kiosk in the lobby ($4) and run into the coworker I had coffee with the other day. We chat and head up to the office together. I settle in to watch some videos related to the topic of our current project. T. also treats himself to coffee ($2). $6

10 a.m. — My best friend from college is in town on business next week and has arranged to stay an extra day. He’s proposed going to go to a drag brunch so I do some research and find one that looks fantastic. T. has a running event that morning so I only get two tickets ($60). I do a lap around the office between responding to emails and taking notes on the videos. $60

12:30 p.m. — I love when food tastes even better the day after and the puttanesca doesn’t disappoint. The coworker from earlier and I have lunch together in the kitchen so no mindless social media scrolling today. I go with her down to the coffee kiosk but don’t feel like getting anything myself. T. is at home for lunch today and places an order for dog food, treats, very important poop bags, and a new toy for C. because he can’t help himself. $67.90

4:40 p.m. — I end up staying later than planned because a meeting (which should have been an email) runs long. Oh well. I stop at the library before heading home to browse and pick up a few books (Nine Pints, Love Lettering, The Widows of Malabar Hill, On the Clock). I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to fully put into words how much I love (love, love) libraries, especially being able to visit new ones while traveling. I think they say a lot about a place and its community.

5:30 p.m. — I do another YouTube workout video and C. joins me in downward dog. She is way more flexible than I am. Afterward, I curl up on the couch with my laptop and work on personal writing projects, including looking over a piece for my writer’s group tomorrow. I still have my freelance website and portfolio up, but between the cross-country move and the new job I’ve stopped actively looking for gigs. The occasional one trickles in from time to time but the income is basically negligible. T. is at the networking happy hour and buys two beers. $11

7:30 p.m. — Dinner is cobbled together from the bits and pieces that are already in the fridge: the rest of the sausages and roasted vegetables, a few slices of cheese, and an apple. I get a call from a friend from home — another good friend tripped on the stairs in her (very old) building and broke her nose and damaged her top row of teeth. Our friend is working part-time while finishing undergrad part-time and her insurance has a super high deductible. My friend and I both venmo her $100 to help defray the ambulance and ER costs. It’s not much, but hopefully, it’ll help somewhat. I message our friend’s boyfriend and he says that there’s a possibility that the stairs were not up to code (too high and too narrow). There’s a chance that management will help pay for her medical bills but it’s probably a long shot. Our friend is okay, but I’m still upset and wish there was more I could do (short of overhauling the whole system so she doesn’t have to worry about the cost, uuugggh). $100

9:30 p.m. — I take C. down for a quick walk, shower, make some sleepytime tea to help me relax, and climb into bed with one of my new library books (Nine Pints — I read Bad Blood a few months ago and was surprised to find myself fascinated by the topic. They’re very different books and I highly recommend both). T. gets home and we catch each other up on our days. I can’t seem to unwind and we put on vintage The Office episodes while he rubs my back to help me fall asleep. It works like a charm.

Daily Total: $244.90

Day Four

4:30 a.m. — T. gets up to study like the disciplined human he is. I snuggle up for more delicious sleep.

6 a.m. — Wake up to a ton of messages and updates about last night. My friend is out of the ER and doing alright at home, which is what’s important. I’m dragging a bit this morning but brighten up after seeing T. and C. and having a sip of coffee. C. and I head outside and she checks her emails and does other business (sends invoices maybe? I definitely don’t miss that part of freelancing). T. has whipped up scrambled eggs and toast, and we eat them completely drenched in hot sauce (is it possible to buy stock in Valentina? I should check). I get my things ready for work, stock up on desk snacks since I’m running low, and listen to some Of Montreal on the T to put some pep in my step.

12 p.m. — The morning has basically been one big game of email whack-a-mole right from the get-go, and I finally have a breather to stretch my legs and make some office tea. I decide to take lunch already and get a falafel plate ($8.50) from one of the food trucks down the street. Yum. T. bought a coffee a few hours earlier ($2) and he buys lunch and another coffee ($10.30). $20.80

2:15 p.m. — My energy is flagging. I buy M&M’s from the vending machine and mix them with the walnuts and cranberries I brought earlier to trick myself into pushing through the next few hours. $1

4 p.m. — Done! I usually work from home on Fridays and make sure to pack up my work laptop and the notes I need. I could work 100% remotely, but after freelancing I like the structure of coming into the office. It makes me feel like I’m in a millennial reboot of Dilbert. I drop everything off at home, pick up my personal laptop, play with C. for a bit, and head out again to meet my writing group at a cafe. I get a London Fog. $4

6 p.m. — I’m still finding my feet with this new group, but they are super encouraging and supportive, and the weekly meetings are a great way to motivate myself to actually write for myself instead of pushing it on the back burner. The cafe is on T.’s way home and we walk the rest of the way together. Neither of us feels like cooking or digging through the freezer tonight, so pizza it is! T. calls in our order (pepperoni, black olives, red onion, and spinach) and goes to get it while I queue up the new season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (no spoilers, just going to say that I wish we had just stuck to the wonderfulness that was the first season, but now we’re here and we’re committed). We descend on the pizza like vultures. $22.40

8:30 p.m. — We are stuffed, happy and tired. T. takes C. out and I get rid of the evidence that a pizza massacre ever occurred. I shower and crawl into bed, checking what’s up on social media and falling down a cookie decorating video rabbit hole on Instagram. T. stays up to study and I don’t wake up when he finally gets to bed.

Daily Total: $48.20

Day Five

6:30 a.m. — No 4 a.m. alarm! It’s a sleep-in day for both of us but C. didn’t get the memo. We wake up to her little wet nose in our faces, probably checking to see if we’re still breathing. I take her down while T. makes coffee and peanut butter banana toast for breakfast. I’m still too full from last night, but T. the bottomless pit has no such problem. I boot up my work laptop and log in early. Looks like everyone else working from home today had the same idea. T. gets his things together and heads to campus.

10 a.m. — I take a break from back-and-forth edits to make another coffee and have some yogurt with granola. The dog food and treats T. bought earlier in the week are delivered, and C. and I take a break to play with her new toy: an octopus that is probably going to lose most of its legs within the week. T. gets coffee. $2

12:30 p.m. — There isn’t much movement in Slack and I decide to work through what would usually be my lunch break so that I can end even earlier (aka be online in case something comes up, but really just be working on the Friday NYT crossword and lurking on my usual discussion boards). I have a tangerine and call that lunch since I’m still not very hungry. The dog walker comes by to take C. out and we chat for a bit about the semester and her classes. I venmo her for this week ($90, included in monthly expenses). T. has an off-campus lunch meeting. $17.70

2:30 p.m. — Quitting time! I close out by writing a to-do list for next week and triumphantly shut the laptop. I put on another YouTube workout and can really feel the burn this time. T. comes home and we become couch zombies for a bit to switch into weekend mode. I’m suddenly capital-H hungry and make a turkey and cheese sandwich for second lunch.

4 p.m. — Two of T.’s classmates and their significant others are coming over for a drink before we meet up with a larger group from (one of) his programs. We rock-paper-scissors to see who tidies up and who goes out to get snacks. T. lets the Roomba loose and attempts to organize his nest of papers and I bundle up to go to the grocery store. I’m not sure what these people drink so I grab a bottle of white and a few types of beer to cover my bases, as well as kettle chips and cheddar popcorn. $21.02

6:30 p.m. — T. and I shower and both us and the apartment are as tidy as we’re going to get. I’m not the best in groups, especially if I don’t know anyone (but if you want a one-on-one, I’m your gal), so I’m kind of nervous when they first come over. T.’s classmates and their partners are very nice and easy-going, which helps me get over my nervousness quickly. A glass of wine (or two) also helps. C., however, is in her element and volunteers as chip crumb expert.

8:30 p.m. — Someone calls an Uber (T. venmos them $10 later for our portion) and we meet up with others from the program. T. braves the crowd at the bar to get a beer and a gin and ginger ale for me (which ends up going straight to my head), and we split an order of fries and chicken tenders ($26.90). The conversation quickly turns technical and I end up talking with one of the partners who was at our place earlier. He’s also very much out of his element and we bond over our mutual social anxiety. $36.90

10:30 p.m. — The group is moving to another bar but T. and I are ready to go home. We say our goodbyes and get an Uber ($16.88). T. takes C. outside and buys me a bag of Swedish Fish at the corner store ($1.50), which I happily and slightly tipsily eat in bed while we play 30 Rock roulette and watch random episodes. $18.38

Daily Total: $96

Day Six

6:30 a.m. — I didn’t set an alarm but my internal one helpfully wakes me up at 6:30 anyway. T.’s did the same to him, but at 5:30, so thank goodness for small mercies. We have coffee and I work on the Saturday crossword (I wouldn’t survive five minutes without autocheck). I get about halfway done before I start getting ready for our weekly breakfast date (yoga pants with less dog fuzz, actually brushing my hair before throwing it in a bun).

8:30 a.m. — We head to a place in the neighborhood. It’s still early enough that it’s not overrun with hungover undergrads so there’s barely a wait. We each get drip coffee and breakfast burritos, which are heavenly. Both T. and I are naturally early risers and figuring out that both of us preferred having a standing breakfast date instead of feeling obligated to limit dates to dinner (when we’re both exhausted and just want to be cuddled up in bed) was a major turning point in our relationship. Not having to deal with zero-contact deployments anymore has also helped a ton (funny how that works). $30

12 p.m. — T. putters around and studies a bit at home before heading out on his long run of the week (a casual 27 miles…the couch potato in me has no words). The weather is nice today and C. and I take a longer walk than usual while listening to a book podcast (Sentimental Garbage, I could listen to her Irish accent all day).

1:30 p.m. — I’m meeting up with a girl that I matched with on Bumble BFF a few weeks ago (do you match with BFFs? I never know which verb to use). We got coffee before the holidays and I think we clicked, but with everything being crazy we haven’t seen each other since even though we’ve texted a fair bit. I put more effort into getting dressed for this date than the one I had with my husband (actual non-yoga pants, a cute sweater). We meet at a coffee shop and I’m practically vibrating from all the coffee I’ve already had today, so I get an Earl Grey tea and a blueberry scone ($5.60). The conversation is a bit stilted at first but we warm up quickly. T. buys a bottle of water out on his run ($1.07). $6.67

3:30 p.m. — We leave the coffee shop and wander in and out of a few stores but neither of us is looking for anything in particular. I see an enormous and criminally expensive candle in Anthropologie that I really like. It’s not something I would ordinarily buy, but I still have an Anthro gift card from a Christmas gift I had to return (the thought was in the right place, but the size and style were very off). I pay the difference. $3.78

5 p.m. — The girl and I part ways and I take the T home. I think we had a good time, but trying to make new friends in a new city is exhausting and takes up so much mental energy. T. is studying when I get back. I take a shower, settle into comfy clothes and decide to recharge my introvert batteries by starting a puzzle and listening to podcasts. The American Girls and I have a grand ole time.

7 p.m. — T. takes a study break to make spaghetti and a spinach side salad, and I am fully on board this carbo-load train. He retreats back into his book fort after dinner, where he’ll probably be for a while. I load and run the dishwasher, take C. out for her nighttime walkabout, and return to the puzzle. I make some sleepytime tea, bring a mug to T., and sort through puzzle pieces until my eyes cross. I read in bed for a while (Love Lettering — I have a huge crush on Kate Clayborn and her characters and her writing style) before falling asleep around 10, and T. comes in a bit later.

Daily Total: $40.45

Day Seven

6 a.m. — C. jumps into bed to snuggle with us, which almost never happens (she’s very loving, but prefers to keep her distance) so it must really be cold today. We enjoy the cuddles for as long as possible until she starts getting restless with how boring we’re being. T. takes her out and I make coffee and manage to fit a few pieces of the puzzle together before they get back. We work on the puzzle together for a while before T. makes peanut butter toast and settles in to study for a few hours. I eventually have some yogurt and granola for breakfast and play with C. and her new toy for a while (the octopus is still eight-legged but time will tell).

10:30 a.m. — T. emerges to make another pot of coffee. I agree to another cup and he attempts to explain what he’s studying to help work out the problem sets. Not going to lie, my eyes glaze over a bit with all of the technical theory, but all he really needs is a sounding board to talk them through out loud. C. is usually his first choice but she’s currently taking a very important nap, so I’m the fallback. He eventually goes on a short run to stretch his legs and I sort through laundry for him to start when he gets back. The light in this building’s basement laundry room won’t stop flickering ominously and I have consumed enough true crime media to know that I don’t want to become the subject of Netflix’s next hit docuseries while doing laundry.

12:30 p.m. — C. and I go for a walk and I can feel my cheeks become the picture of health from all this crisp New England winter air. T. is doing a post-run stretching video when we get back and I join in. He takes the laundry down to start a few loads (with the dryer it comes out to $6.25 on a pre-paid laundry card we loaded $50 on to last week) and I warm up leftover spaghetti for lunch. T. also has a peanut butter sandwich, milk, and bananas to top it off.

3:30 p.m. — I wake up from an unexpected but not unwelcome post-lunch couch nap. I’ve been listening to The Happiness Lab podcast (from an MD recommendation!) and I’m finally caught up on episodes. I decide to sign up for the online course (free, since I don’t need a certificate) and go through the videos for weeks one and two. T. switched the laundry over while I was napping and we fold and put the piles away. I spend some time reading articles online and looking for a recipe to try this week. Maybe I’ll attempt Italian wedding soup.

6:30 p.m. — T. is still studying and I’m starting to get hungry. I make a pot of rice and fix us rice bowls with canned tuna, edamame, and quick-pickled vegetables. I leave his bowl in the fridge for later. T.’s little sister FaceTimes to say hi to C., and T. comes out for a dinner break and to chat for a bit.

8:30 p.m. — I make some more progress on the puzzle and decide to call it a night. T. has also decided that he’s had enough studying and we watch some House Hunters to unwind. He gets even more vocal than I do whenever the topic of entertainment space comes up (don’t get him started on carpets or paint colors). T. takes C. out while I cobble together something vaguely resembling a lunch to bring tomorrow and take a shower. We read in bed before cuddling and falling asleep.

A Timeline Of Simone Biles’s Most Mind-Blowing Moments

$

I’ve been a mega-fan of Simone Biles long before she was dubbed “the GOAT” of gymnastics. Honestly, what’s not to love? She’s a four-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time world all-around champ. She’s not just doing backflips — she has several (incredibly difficult) moves literally named after her. She was the first Black female all-around world champion, and is the most decorated gymnast of all time. She’s also a fearless advocate, having spoken out about sexual abuse, body shaming, and recently, the “toxic culture of trolling.”

“She is, without question, the most dominant gymnast in the history of the sport,” Bart Conner, Olympic gold medalist and gymnastics analyst, told ESPN. “She’s doing the most difficult gymnastics ever attempted, and she does it effortlessly. She’s the perfect gymnast for the perfect time.”

In honor of Black History Month, I rounded up clips of Biles’s greatest hits; the moments that she made sports history with her gravity-defying moves and unshakable resolve. Watch these on repeat whenever you need a little dose of awe.

Biles took home four medals from the 2013 World Championships — including her first all-around title, according to the Olympic Channel. It’s hard to believe, but at the time she was still basically a newbie with a lot to prove.

Biles secured another all-around title at the 2014 World Championships, and a third from her 2015 performance, shown here. That last one secured the gymnast the distinction of being the first woman to win three consecutive world all-around titles.

During Biles’s first time at the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016, she dominated. She led her team (which included Laurie Hernandez, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, and Madison Kocian) to gold. She also won four individual gold medals, a feat that had been accomplished by only four other gymnasts before her, none of whom had been on the U.S. team.

At the time, one announcer famously said: “It’s Biles by miles.”

In 2018, after a brief break from the sport, Biles came back swinging — er, flipping. At the U.S. National Championships, she became the first woman in the U.S. to earn five national all-around titles, according to The New York Times

In 2019, Biles became the most decorated gymnast in the history of the World Championships, winning 25 medals. She won her 24th — outpacing the previous record of 23 medals, set by Vitaly Scherbo in 1996 — with her balance beam routine. Then, after performing her floor exercise, she beat her own record.

Biles blew our collective minds when she became the first ever female gymnast to cleanly land a “triple double” at the USA Gymnastics Championships in August 2019. That same year, USA Gymnastics announced that it would name the impossible move, which involves two double backflips and three twists, the “Biles II.”

As if the triple double wasn’t enough, in the same competition Biles also made history by performing a double-double dismount on the balance beam, Refinery29 previously reported. She was the first person to attempt and land that move as well.

Oh — and did we mention she’s only 22? Never has the term GOAT been more appropriate.

Female athletes deserve to be paid what they’re worth, given the attention they’ve earned, and given space on and off the mat to shine. @Onherturf is here to celebrate them, inspiring the next generation of badass women. Follow us here to join the movement.

The To All The Boys 2 Production Designer On Lara Jean’s Bedroom & Styling A Treehouse

P.S. I Still Love You, the sequel to the Netflix original film To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, was released earlier this week just in time for Valentine’s Day. Viewers were, of course, immediately taken with Lara Jean’s love triangle with Peter and John Ambrose — or love rhombus if you include Gen — but they were also buzzing about the film’s many sweetly designed sets. From the teens’ abandoned childhood treehouse to the retirement home where Lara Jean volunteers alongside John Ambrose, these backdrops bring memories to life, which is exactly what the film’s productions designer Chris August was aiming to do.

Following the release of To All The Boys 2, we spoke to August about his work on the film. He shared which interior design trends were brought into the sets, which sets were most challenging to create, and how the story’s theme of memories informed design decisions.

Refinery29: After the first To All The Boys movie, Lara Jean’s bedroom became an instantly iconic addition to the teen movie bedroom hall of fame. Did you make any changes to the bedroom in the second film?
Chris August: There was literally just a month timeline-wise between the first and the second film, so we couldn’t change it and didn’t want to change it because it had worked really well. Michael [Fimognari], the director, was the DP on the first film, and he picked a very defined palette with a certain range of colors.

In terms of the bedroom and all the furnishings, one of the problems was that we had to reproduce what had been done because nothing was saved from the first film. We had to have the bedspread made. We even had to build some of the furniture from scratch so that it was close enough to match. A lot of the furniture for the film, especially the first one, were found pieces that were painted so once they disappear, it was hard to match them, but we did basically match everything.

We tried to match, as well as we could, the style and intent of the bedroom artwork. When they did the first film, they didn’t care about clearances as much, but by the time we took it over for the second part of the franchise, we had a distributor that was very keen on risk management so we had to reproduce all of the art in the vein of but using only cleared artwork that our artists created. That was a bit of a challenge, but yes, we tried to stay completely faithful to the initial bedroom.

Belleview is the chicest retirement home I’ve ever seen. I was especially taken with Stormy’s bedroom with its vintage glam vibes. How did you find the location and decide to make it so unexpectedly luxurious?
That’s what actually got me the job. I read the script and it had an old folks’ home, and I had just done a film with two old folks’ homes in it and had scouted every old folks’ home in the area. They are, as you can imagine, depressing. Really depressing. But anyway, when I first read the script, I thought, well, this is an old folks’ home, but it’s really about the characters of these elderly people and their stories. All of these Lara Jean movies are about stories and memories so we wanted to play off of memories. It’s about her letters, her memory of these letters that were sent out — so we wanted it to not be depressing. We wanted it to be uplifting with the elderly people that she comes in contact with, like Stormy, who have great stories to tell and experiences to relay.

With that in mind, my pitch in my interview was, let’s get a big old mansion. These people want to live like they lived when they were on their own. We spent a lot of time finding the place. We went to a number of different possibilities until we found Casa Mia.

One of the problems with it being a heritage mansion is that you generally can’t do a lot of painting so we found the right basic color palettes that we could then alter as we needed to, and we did that mostly with graphics and with drapery. It had great bones to tell the story about being old, but also being classic.

Were there any interior design trends that you decided to incorporate into the sets?
We went with retro, sort of the 50s, 60s, and added the 70s into it to create a certain look. We incorporated that because that’s quite current, and that fits in very well with the color scheme that we have. We have a very 60s Gucci color scheme so it was easy to shift into retro.

For the older folks’ home, we wanted to do more of a classic conglomerate of the 20s, 30s, and 40s, but the problem was the 20s and 30s were nice and classic, but the clothes weren’t very colorful. You don’t get into really colorful clothes until around the end of the war and the early fifties, that’s when colors blossom. So we shifted our color palette, but we use styles more from the 30s and 40s. We updated the color palette of those clothes where you’d normally be in browns and grays and some pinks and some greens. We shifted that and made everything much brighter.

Do you have a favorite set-piece that the viewers may not have noticed?
They’re all special to me for different reasons. The party was a lot of fun. I liked the basement set pieces there where Lara Jean has that great scene with John around the piano where it’s sort of a breakup moment. It was very heartfelt so again, we were surrounding them with just the right sort of antiques — going into the 20s and some art deco pieces — to make that feel really genuine for them.

Some of those antique pieces we designed — all the visual elements like the murals. The other, we had to go through antique stores and find local collectors and bring in some serious pieces that really sell that era. I’m a big believer in working the subconscious. I think we all have a subconscious connection to different time periods and different elements. It’s not something that we necessarily consciously think about, but when you see it on a screen, it evokes an emotional response. I’m always big on trying to find those key elements that evoke the right emotional response that we’re looking for in a scene.

What was the biggest challenge you faced designing the sets for this film?
Generally, your challenges are really schedule-driven and things like that. But one challenge and one set that I really enjoyed was the treehouse. A treehouse is a childhood thing. I built a treehouse for my kids, and they really loved it. We had to think about how to build a treehouse that would work for this generation of teenagers that they could relate to. Also, I think we had seven cast members in that treehouse, and we had exterior scenes so logistically, we had to build it so it could hold a whole crew and be able to shoot it from the outside. It was logistically really challenging, but we managed to pull it off where we didn’t have to do a lot of visual effects. We found a great tree in a great yard, and we were able to build a set that gave you a sense of abandonment like this had been their clubhouse but it wasn’t anymore.

We had to build that set I think three times and move it around with us to different locations that would have to match with the same trajectory of the sod. We had to have colored drapery that would allow certain colors of light through to give us a sense of cheer. So, again, it was logistically very challenging but rewarding in that it was a good looking set.

Former Love Island Host Caroline Flack Is Dead At 40

Caroline Flack, the former host of the U.K.’s Love Island, has died, her family has confirmed. She was 40.

“We can confirm that our Caroline passed away today on the 15th February,” her family said in a statement to the Press Association, per The Hollywood Reporter. “We would ask that the press both respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time.”

Flack began her career as an actress for the British sketch show Bo’ Selecta! and presented various shows for the network ITV in the following years, including I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! NOW! and The Xtra Factor. She was crowned winner of Strictly Come Dancing in 2014 and began presenting the popular dating reality show Love Island in 2015.

She stepped down from Love Island in December 2019 after she was charged with assault by beating in a domestic incident at her home. Flack and her boyfriend, Lewis Burton, had denied reports she had hit him with a lamp, according to HuffPost U.K.

Flack pleaded not guilty and was released on bail but forbidden from contacting Burton until the trial. On Friday, however, Burton attempted to contact her, reports The Guardian. She was due to appear in court on March 4.

Flack took her own life and was found in her east London apartment, a lawyer for the family confirmed to The Telegraph

Flack was not the first person involved with Love Island to die by suicide. Contestants Sophie Gradon and Mile Thalassitis took their own lives in 2018 and 2019, respectively, after appearing on the show. Thalassitis’ death prompted ITV to have Love Island’s medical support independently reviewed, according to the BBC.

Laura Whitmore, who replaced Flack as Love Island’s host, paid tribute to her on Twitter. “I’m trying to find the words but I can’t,” she wrote alongside a photo of the pair together and a poem.

Jameela Jamil also mourned Flack on Twitter, referencing tabloid headlines about the former host.

In a statement to Refinery29, a spokesperson for ITV said, “Everybody at Love Island and ITV is shocked and saddened by this desperately sad news. Caroline was a much loved member of the Love Island team and our sincere thoughts and condolences are with her family and friends.”

Refinery29 has also reached out to representatives for Flack.

If you are thinking about suicide, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or the Suicide Crisis Line at 1-800-784-2433.

Tessa Majors Case Sees 14-Year-Old Boy Charged With Murder

A 14-year-old boy was charged in connection to the murder of Tessa Majors. The teen, who has not yet been identified by name, is believed to have wielded the knife that killed the New York City college student during an attempted robbery. He’s the second suspect arrested for the December stabbing death of the Barnard College freshman.

The boy was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, and several counts of robbery, according to The New York Times. He will be tried as an adult, according to New York City police. “Sadly, it cannot bring back this young woman, this student, this victim,” NYPD Commissioner Dermot F. Shea said in a press conference on February 15. “We can say we are confident that we have the person in custody who stabbed her.”

Majors was found dead outside of Morningside Park on December 11. Two days later, a 13-year-old suspect was arrested and charged in Majors’ murder. The authorities believed that there were other suspects in the case, including a 14-year-old boy who reportedly fled from a car on his way to meet police for questioning in the days after Majors was found.

In late December, authorities tracked the 14-year-old to a home in the Bronx. Majors reportedly bit the hand of her attacker and authorities believed that the teenager’s family was hiding him from police until his hand healed. The mark on the 14-year-old’s hand was consistent with a bite, according to an official briefed on the case who spoke with The Times.

Following the teen’s questioning, he was let go with the police focusing on the DNA tests ordered by a Manhattan judge to link him to the case. Authorities reportedly collected pieces of physical evidence, including blood samples and a cellphone, along with video evidence and statements from witnesses and the suspect that tied the 14-year-old to the crime scene.

In a statement sent to Refinery29 following her death, Majors’ family expressed their heartbreak over this tragedy. “We lost a very special, very talented, and very well-loved young woman. Tess shone bright in this world, and our hearts will never be the same.”

Shea echoed this in his statement following this arrest. “And again, sadly, there is no comfort that we can give them,” he said in a press conference. “And for that, we are sorry.”

We’ve got a brand-new fire burning from within on Sunday as fiery Mars makes his way into hardworking Capricorn. We’re collectively inspired to achieve our goals, and work toward reaching new heights on the professional front while the action planet moves through this sensible sign. Messenger Mercury begins his first retrograde of the year in sensitive Pisces on Sunday, helping us to slow down and observe our emotions. Take notice of when you’re feeling uncomfortable, and use it as a lesson to move forward. It’s important to remember that everyone needs a little extra time during this transit to communicate. We’re ready to understand our mental state better starting Tuesday when the Sun enters sensitive Pisces, giving us the chance to enhance our psychic nature — and nurture our creative sides.

The future is exceptionally bright on Thursday when bountiful Jupiter sextiles dreamy Neptune. Use this day to focus on how you can make the world a better place and share your gifts with others. There’s a need to challenge the status quo on Friday when warrior Mars trines chaotic Uranus. This is a day for taking risks and beginning exciting new projects. Projects created with love shine bright.

Cancer
June 21 to July 22

How do you work best, Cancer? You’ve got the chance to optimize your flow starting Sunday, when career-ruling Mars speeds into disciplined Capricorn. You may need more time to recenter yourself beginning Sunday, as Mercury, the planet of inner growth, begins his first retrograde of the year in sensitive Pisces. Make time for a daily practice of meditation, journaling, or other quiet time for you to collect your thoughts. On Tuesday the financial-minded Sun lights up your  9th house of exploration, adventure, and belief, helping you to think outside of the box. Reconsider what you need, and ask yourself if you can do away with spending habits that aren’t enriching your life.

Leo
July 23 to August 22

What do you need to sustain you, Leo? You could become interested in leading a more minimalist lifestyle starting Sunday, when money-ruling Mercury goes retrograde. Experiment with a new budget that brings you toward your financial goals. A metamorphosis is coming — the ruling Sun highlights your 8th house of transformation, mystery, and dramatic change. Use this transit to explore your evolution. Did you miss out on celebrating Valentine’s Day last week? An equally romantic day arrives on Saturday when the Sun sextiles affectionate Uranus. If you’re single, this is an excellent opportunity to experiment with someone new in a low-stakes environment. Attached Leos will enjoy the company of their partners as they’re treated to a day of indulgence.
Virgo
August 23 to September 22

Ready to take charge in the bedroom, Virgo? You could be in the mood to lead your partner on Sunday, when sensual Mars moves into strict Capricorn. If you’re single, the energy could manifest itself in your approach to potential partners — you’re not interested in people who won’t put effort into you. You may feel ready to take a break from work starting Sunday, when status-minded Mercury begins his first retrograde of the year in intuitive Pisces. Find ways to recharge your spirit, and reduce your output as the messenger planet moves in reverse. If you’re not ready to take a step back, focus on networking when the Sun illuminates your 7th house of partnerships, contracts, and business starting Tuesday. Aim to strengthen your relationships and listen to your colleagues. Bonds built now can forge prosperous new connections.

Have you got someone special in your crosshairs, Libra? If you're single, things could get serious on Sunday if you’re single when romantic Mars moves into driven Capricorn. Avoid getting your heart broken by not putting all of your eggs in one basket. If you’re partnered, this transit could inspire you to take your relationship to a new level. Make sure that your S.O. is on the same page before you get your hopes up, though. Prioritize your quiet time starting Sunday as inner growth-ruling Mercury goes retrograde in emotional Pisces. You need a little extra TLC while this planet moves in reverse. Work toward creating a solid wellness routine starting Tuesday, when the Sun highlights your 6th house of health, order, and service. Taking care of your physical being will help to elevate your mind.
Scorpio
October 23 to November 21

Even rebels need a little structure, Scorpio. You’re encouraged to create a smarter schedule for yourself on Sunday, when wellness-minded Mars speeds into sensible Capricorn. Your new routines could lead you to something great starting Tuesday, when the Sun, which oversees your career, brightens up your 5th house of creativity, pleasure, and romance. On Thursday, material Jupiter sextiles dreamy Neptune inspiring you to take a few artistic risks. Get cozy at home on Friday when routine-ruling Mars trines domestic Uranus. Invest in new ways to maximize your space to enhance your health and happiness. Inspiration could strike at home on Saturday when the status-conscious Sun sextiles domestic Uranus. Keep your camera handy and share your ideas on social media.
Sagittarius
November 22 to December 21

Craving a little rest, Sagittarius? You’ve been working extra-hard lately, but a much-needed break arrives on Sunday when career- and love-ruling Mercury goes retrograde. It’s time for you to recalibrate and collect yourself so you can plan your next big adventure. Nestle in your space starting Tuesday, when the Sun enters your 4th house of family, instincts, and foundations. Invite friends over instead of going out, and focus on healing your sweet spirit. You’ll save money and improve your surroundings on Thursday, when ruling Jupiter sextiles domestic Neptune. Figure out what your space is lacking and seek to improve upon it during this low-energy time.
Capricorn
December 22 to January 19

Imagine your dream home, Capricorn. Use this vision to propel your actions when domestic Mars enters Capricorn on Sunday. Look to Pinterest for design inspiration, and DIY your way to a more harmonious space. You’ll be happy to nest while routine-ruling Mercury goes retrograde on Sunday. The messenger planet is reversing his path, and in doing so is fiddling with your plans. Accept the little speed bumps that arrive in stride and move forward with grace. Things might be a little haywire due to Mercury’s retrograde, but you’re able to articulate yourself with ease starting Tuesday as the Sun highlights your 3rd house of communication, thought, and community. Use this gift to express your spiritual side, especially on Thursday when inner growth-ruling Jupiter sextiles chatty Neptune.

Your February Horoscope, Revealed

Here Is Your 2020 Financial Horoscope

How These Astrologers Are Rethinking Gender

How To Survive The First Mercury Retrograde Of The Decade

$

Mercury, computer artwork.

The first Mercury retrograde of the year — and decade — begins on February 16. The first planet from the sun has been moving through Pisces since February 3. On the 16th, it will begin to move backwards in its orbit, as seen from our perspective here on Earth.

While it’s retrograding, Mercury will re-enter Aquarius on March 4. Then, after the planet begins to move forward again on March 9, it will return to the sign of the Fish on March 16.

In astrology, Mercury rules communication, technology, and travel, so when it retrogrades, prepare for these areas to get a little messed up. Think exes in your DMs, social media platforms going down, and missing your flight.

However, we’ve got some good news: This Mercury retrograde will be the easiest of the three we’ll experience in 2020. “Out of the three times Mercury is going to be retrograde this year — it will also retrograde in the summer and in the fall — this retrograde is Pisces is the most positive one,” says Narayana Montufar, senior astrologer at Astrology.com and Horoscope.com

That’s because Mercury is in its fall in Pisces, meaning the pair aren’t a natural fit. “While it is true that Mercury’s logical and analytical capabilities will be debilitated during these three weeks, this retrograde won’t be as bad because the degree in which Mercury will station retrograde is a degree ruled by Venus, according to ancient astrology,” Montúfar says.

We have Venus to thank for making this retrograde relatively easy. “This retrograde will be infused with the positive, pleasurable vibes of Venus…yay!” Montúfar says. “Yes, there will be the classical misunderstandings and technological glitches, and when we communicate, it will feel like we are talking underwater. So, when frustration knocks at our door, the best thing we can do is take a bath, go for a walk on the beach, watch a movie, or even better — do something creative.”

The worst of the retrograde will come while Mercury moves back into Aquarius. Astrologer Lisa Stardust explains, “This time around, Mercury will turn retrograde during its swim in the reflective waves of Pisces and head back into Aquarius, which will cause confusion around our emotions and intuition.”

She adds, “Lies will be exposed and receptions revealed, due to elusive Neptune’s heavy hand in this transit. Paranoias will reach a peak high. Grounding exercises and meditations are key to help us all get through this emotionally charged and confusing time.”

Despite all the panic, astrologers advise that this much-maligned transit can actually be useful. As Montúfar explains, “Mercury retrogrades are the opportunities the universe gives us to slow down in order to reflect, redo, rethink, and reconceptualize important things in our lives. And when we consciously listen to this call instead of freaking out, we can actually make these retrogrades work for us instead of against us.”

The Date That Was My First Date Ever

$

Welcome to 29 Dates, where we explore the weird, wild and sometimes wonderful world of dating — one date at a time.

DashDividers_1_500x100

We were 14 years old and our saga had begun a few weeks earlier when we kissed at the school dance, inspired by the poetry of Ja Rule ft. Ashanti (“Now you street promotin’ the dick game is potent”). Our romantic entanglement (with tongues) was cut short by our love story’s first antagonist, Mr Fraser, the geography teacher who wrenched us apart and banished us to opposite ends of the gym to await our fates (detention).

In the following days, our star-crossed relationship faltered. Unable to share more than a brief glance across the cafeteria without being subjected to crude oral sex gestures from our friends, it seemed that unless we could get any time on our own, our romance was doomed.

The invitation to The Date arrived in style; a polyphonic version of “Teenage Dirtbag” from my Nokia 3310 alerted me to a new SMS, its contents comparable to Napoleon’s letters to Josephine. “U want 2 go 2 the movies sat x” it read. I did. He knew me so well.

The invitation to The Date arrived in style; an SMS that read: U want 2 go 2 the movies sat x.

I dressed in low-rise jeans that gave a sophisticated hint of red thong and a cropped bomber jacket unzipped to my nonexistent (but surely soon to be heaving) bosom.

He, on the other hand, arrived at our meeting spot (Cineworld at Gloucester Quays retail park) with three of his friends in tow. They ignored me and bought tickets to Ridley Scott’s war epic Black Hawk Down. He bought one for himself and, after a bit of dithering, one for me too. I melted.

Despite the somewhat unromantic nature of a movie based on a military excursion to capture two Somali warlords, my beloved seized my hand and held it for the entire film. At 144 minutes long, by the time Josh Hartnett saved the day our grip was as slippery as a wet fish but the prolonged physical connection had created a powerful bond that could not be severed. We were…together.

Until, that was, three weeks later when I sent him a text meant for a friend, saying I was going to break up with him later that day. He called me and did it first.

Gutted.

Welcome to Money Diaries, where we’re tackling what might be the last taboo facing modern working women: money. We’re asking millennials how they spend their hard-earned money during a seven-day period — and we’re tracking every last dollar.

Today: a Law Student, Intern, and Cam Girl who makes $29,000 per year and spends some of her money this week on a pair of Everlane Day Heels.

Occupation: Law Student, Intern, Cam Girl
Industry: Legal Services and Sex Work
Age: 27
Location: New York, NY
Salary: $29,000
Paycheck Amount (1x/week): Varies month-to-month, but on average $600.
Gender Identity: Woman

Monthly Expenses
Rent: $833
Loans: $0
Gym membership: $30 (student discount!)
WiFi: $25 (split with my partner slash roommate)
Con-Ed/Gas: $30
Shared Bank Account: $100 (I put this in a shared bank account with my partner to buy groceries, pay for home things, etc. every month)
Robinhood: $20-$40
Coffee Membership: $36
Cell Phone: $0 (family plan)
School Costs: I’m in law school and my tuition is covered by a scholarship, my parents, and a $22,000 loan that I took out. I’ll graduate with $66,000 in debt. I plan to work in nonprofit law so it will most likely be covered by a repayment plan.

Day One

5 p.m. — It has been a long day of work and this is my first expense of the day. I’m on my way home from work and get a text from my partner that we need food for dinner. I stop at the grocery store down the block and pick up chicken, avocados, bread, and fruit. We split the grocery bill. $9

7 p.m — My friend invites me to see a concert at a private club. I’m not a member, so I seize the opportunity! It’s a great show. She puts drinks on her account, but I pony up for our shared Lyft home as a thank you. I get home around 2 a.m. $40

Daily Total: $49

Day Two

11 a.m. — I wake up late and hungover from last night. I hard boil eggs I already have in the fridge and toast up the bread I bought yesterday. I place an Amazon order for toilet paper, toothpaste, cleaning supplies, and some new lingerie (including a thong with a string of pearls!) to wear on my show. I like to keep it fresh with what I wear for my show, though I can usually wear an outfit three or four times until it gets boring. My friends inherit a lot of (washed!) second-hand lingerie from me. $53.42

2 p.m. — I log in to my cam site and check my messages. A regular has tipped me $25 while I was offline. This is rare — he remembered it was my birthday late and feels bad. I turn my cam on and do a two-hour live show. Several regulars are online and I end up making $552, which is far better than I normally do. After my show, I go down the block and buy a mango with chili powder and two churros from the neighborhood subway churro lady ($6). I’m still high on the tips I earned earlier, and the churros are delicious. $6

5 p.m. — Turns out the drinks from last night weren’t actually put on my friend’s account — she sends me a Venmo charge for the three tequilas I drank last night. $22 per drink seems absurd, but the show was free and I had a great time rubbing shoulders with the New York glitterati. I remember how much I made during my show earlier today and shrug it off. $66

7 p.m. — I eat leftover chicken and pasta from the pantry for dinner with my partner. We watch the new Coen Brothers film on his mom’s Netflix account. It’s been a great day.

Daily Total: $125.42

Day Three

8 a.m. — I swing over to the coffee shop where I have a monthly membership with unlimited coffee, and get a large cappuccino. I tip $1. I see the baristas every day, so I always make sure to leave a tip so they know I appreciate them! They’ll sometimes slip me day-old muffins or empanadas on my way into school when they have day-olds. Us tipping economy folks look out for each other. $1

12 p.m. — I packed lunch today! I’ve been trying to do this more often, but it’s hard. I eat with a girl I tutored last year and we chat about her summer internship applications.

4 p.m. — After yesterday’s show, I’m feeling like a boss. I swing by my neighborhood beauty shop and pick up some glittery glue-on nails ($3.50) and nail glue ($2). I get home and start an hour-long show. I wear the new nails during my show, but it doesn’t sell — the room was quiet and I only make about $20 tips in an hour. I try not to take the low earnings to heart. $5.23

8 p.m. — My partner had a bad day at work, so I take him out for a drink and a burger. I pay and he tips. We head home after drinks and talk until we fall asleep. $43

Daily Total: $49.23

Day Four

7 a.m. — I get up and quickly get ready before heading to class.

11 a.m. — After morning classes, I stop at the gym on my way home. This is the first year I’ve had a private gym membership (rather than the school one) and I love it. My gym has lots of classes and it’s right next to the train on my way home. I do a chill yoga class then lift some weights, focusing on my legs and butt.

1 p.m. — I stop by a Japanese grocery store I love and pick up fresh tofu, eggplant, and tortillas to make a vegan taco recipe I’ve been wanting to try for lunch. $8.20

7 p.m. — I eat leftover tacos for dinner. I get started on my TurboTax and have to pay for the $40 version because my taxes are fairly complex. I have freelance income from tutoring and camming and pay taxes on both. I can write-off school books, teaching materials I use for tutoring, and all of the makeup and lingerie I use for my show. I also write-off my new computer and an expensive camera I bought a few months ago. I also received a grant earlier in the year for a summer fellowship ($6,000), so I include that in my income. I’ll receive a $1,000 refund from the taxes I paid on the grant and other odd jobs. $40

Daily Total: $48.20

Day Five

9 a.m. — I have a chronic illness that makes me prone to weight gain, extra body hair, and acne. I pick up my prescription that controls most of my symptoms. I have student health insurance which isn’t great, but it covers most of the cost of prescriptions. $6

10 a.m. — While surfing the web in class and I see a Poshmark alert that a used pair of my favorite Everlane day heels are for sale. I love Poshmark — both for budgetary and sustainability reasons. I am very picky about the outfits I have to wear to my stuffy legal internships and to court, so I’ve found my perfect items and wait for them to go on sale or pop up on secondhand sites. I snag this pair at a deep discount. $44.89

2 p.m. — Brought lunch again! I’m killing this. I finish up classes and then head home to chill.

7 p.m. — My partner cooks dinner for us while I read for school. Dinner is shrimp from the freezer and veggies from the fridge. We hang out and chat until bedtime.

Daily Total: $50.89

Day Six

8:30 a.m. — I get up and head out to grab a latte at my membership cafe. I tip a dollar again. This morning I get a day-old bagel for free. $1

8:45 a.m. — I got up this early to do a private with a client on Skype. We chat for 10 minutes and then I perform for about 30. He’s shared his identity with me, and even though I’m anonymous, I know we actually have a few friends in common. I look forward to seeing him as our kinks align closely. It’s an awesome show and I come twice (for real!). I really, really love my job, and how I’m able to work relatively short, flexible hours while making decent money. It’s also been fun to explore my sexuality with others and fulfill my exhibitionist tendencies in ways that don’t violate the terms of my mostly monogamous relationship. After my show, I shower and then I stop at Uniqlo to return some clothes I ordered online that were too big. I love that I can shop mindlessly at Uniqlo and always look put-together at work. Plus, their stuff lasts forever. I get a refund for $56.07. After Uniqlo, I head to class.

3 p.m. — Welp, I’m breaking my lunch streak. I pick up a deli salad on my way home from class and eat it while I get set up for my show. A few regulars are on, and a viewer I haven’t met requests a private, which means he tips a minimum amount per minute. I do a short show, then we end up just chatting for a few minutes. The private alone earns me $33, and the whole show puts me at about $100. Not bad for an hour and a half of work. $7.87

7 p.m. — My best friend has me over to her house for dinner. I pick up a six-pack of Tecate on the way. None of my friends know how I earn my pocket change — I think they assume my parents help me out. I’m lucky that I don’t have any more debt for undergrad, but law school tuition is all on me. I will be relying on federal loan repayment which will substantially reduce my loans if I remain in public service work for 10 years, but I am still expecting to pay between $300-$400 per month when I begin working full-time next fall. I might need to continue working nights. $9

Daily Total: $17.87

Day Seven

9 a.m. — I get up and head out, grabbing my usual coffee (I tip $1). I eat an Rx bar for breakfast. I have a big interview this afternoon for a post-grad fellowship and I always perform best on an empty stomach! $1

3 p.m. — The interview went well! I’ll hear back in a few days, but I’m hopeful. I buy a smoothie from a cart outside the office where I interviewed before heading home. $4.75

9 p.m. — My partner and I go out for a few drinks with friends at a bar nearby that does live music. My friend is DJing tonight and put me on the list, so I get into the show for free! It’s my first time here, and I love it — I’ll be back soon. I get a few drinks and we head out in the wee hours of the night. $18.83

Daily Total: $24.58

This Pisces Season, We’ll Make It Work

Ready to feel all the feelings? After a month in aloof Aquarius, the sun is moving into watery Pisces on February 18, where it will stay until March 19. (Note: Despite containing the word “aqua” and being represented by the Water Bearer, Aquarius is an air sign, not a water sign.)

During Aquarius season, we might have felt a bit detached from our emotions. The intellectual Water Bearer prioritizes the head over the heart, and values unique ways of thinking. On the other hand, Pisces has a reputation for being particularly emotional. While Pisces aren’t weeping on the subway every single day, there’s a grain of truth to the stereotype — and we’ll all be feeling some of that Piscean energy while the sun is in the sign of the Fish.

Along with emotions, Pisces is known for being artistic, intuitive, and empathetic, and we’ll benefit from those energies, too. This might be a good time to work on a creative project or bond with your friends.

However, Mercury will be retrograde for most of Pisces season, from February 16 to March 9. During this period, we’ll be prone to errors of communication, technology, and planning. It’s the first Mercury retrograde transit of the year — the next won’t happen til June.

“Mercury retrograde will consume most of Pisces season, making it an emotionally confusing time. We also have some emotional setbacks as we swim through the mystical and intuitive waters of winter,” astrologer Lisa Stardust tells Refinery29.

The other planets also play a role, in particular, Jupiter. “What makes this Pisces season different from the last is that the planetary ruler of Pisces, Jupiter, is now in Capricorn, which adds a tougher and more assertive vibe to the Piscean energy,” Stardust explains.

All in all, this Pisces season might require some effort, but it will likely pay off. “We will be more drawn to making relationships and projects work while we reassess our incentives and passions,” Stardust says.

Queen Of Katwe Star Nikita Pearl Waligwa Is Dead At 15

Nikita Pearl Waligwa, the young Ugandan actress who starred in the 2016 Disney film Queen of Katwe, has died of a brain tumor. She was 15 years old.

Queen of Katwe was Waligwa’s film debut and only listed film credit. She played Gloria, a friend of protagonist Phiona Mutesi, who was played by Madina Nalwanga.

Based on a true story, Queen of Katwe follows Phiona’s rise as a chess prodigy in a Ugandan slum, aided by Gloria and her greater community. The film also starred Lupita Nyong’o as Phiona’s mother Nakku Harriet and David Oyelowo as her teacher Robert Katende.

Waligwa died in a hospital in Kampala on Saturday, according to the BBC. Queen of Katwe director Mira Nair reportedly raised funds to help get Waligwa treatment in India, since Ugandan doctors said they did not have the necessary equipment. She was first diagnosed in 2016 and was cleared to return to school in 2017, but a new tumor was discovered last year.

Waligwa’s death was announced on Sunday by Gayaza High School, where she was a student. The news was shared on the high school’s official Twitter account.

“Fare thee well Nikita Pearl Waligwa,” the school wrote. “You were a darling to many and we have lost you to brain tumor at such a tender age.”

“We are gutted as @gayazahigh community,” the school later tweeted. “No words can explain the pain at the moment. R.I.P Nikita.”

Nyong’o posted about Waligwa’s death on Sunday, as well. “It is with great sadness that I post about the passing of Nikita Waligwa, the sweet, warm, talented girl whom I worked with on the film, Queen Of Katwe,” Nyong’o wrote on Instagram. “She played Gloria with such vibrancy. In her real life she had the enormous challenge of battling brain cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and community as they come to terms with having to say goodbye so soon.”

Oyelowo also shared his condolences on Instagram. “We mourn the loss of our beautiful Nikita Pearl Waligwa,” he wrote. “She was a ball of light in @queenofkatwemovie and in life. Her battle with a brain tumor was humbling to witness. Her light will live on.”

Broken Heart Syndrome Is A Real Thing — And It Hurts

$
0
0

Here’s the thing I always forget about broken hearts: They hurt. Like, physically. Yes, there’s the emotional pain — the sadness and disappointment and fear. But they’re often accompanied by real, tangible aches. That comes out in the way we talk about the experience. We describe having a lump in our throats. Being sick to our stomachs. Feeling like there’s an elephant on our chests. Even the term itself — “a broken heart” — evokes pain.

Those sensations aren’t all in our heads. Losing a loved one or going through a breakup can trigger an actual, medical condition called “broken heart syndrome.” It’s brought on by emotional stress, including intense grief. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

What is broken heart syndrome?

It’s a temporary heart condition that can occur after periods of intense grief or other emotionally tumultuous times. Ninety percent of cases are in women between ages 58 and 75, Harvard Health Publishing reports.

Extreme stress can cause the “left ventricle of the heart to balloon out at the bottom while the neck remains narrow,” ScienceDaily describes. That hurts. In fact, many people confuse broken heart syndrome (also called Takotsubo syndrome or TTS) with a heart attack because the symptoms — including breathlessness and chest pains — are similar, reports the Cleveland Clinic. But while heart attacks occur when the arteries are blocked by a blood clot from fatty buildup, no such blockage exists during cases of broken heart syndrome.

What causes broken heart syndrome?

As we mentioned, stress seems to play a major role in the onset of the condition. Research suggests that broken heart syndrome can be caused by episodes of severe emotional distress, such as grief, anger, or fear, or reactions to happy, joyful events. Basically, anything that can cause an intense or extreme emotional reaction.

Physical stressors can also be a trigger, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Think: stroke, seizure, asthma, or significant bleeding.

But what is it about stress that affects your heart? To answer that question, researchers scanned the brains of 15 people with TTS and compared it with brain scans of 39 healthy people and published the results in the European Heart Journal.

The findings: Compared to healthy subjects, the “broken hearted” people had less communication between certain areas of the brain. The regions that control how we process emotions “spoke” less to the regions that control the autonomic nervous system (which regulates unconscious responses, like heart rate, breathing, and blinking), described Christian Templin, MD, PhD, the study author, to ScienceDaily.

He goes on to say that because of this communication glitch, when people with TTS are stressed, it could lead more easily to the overstimulation of their autonomic nervous systems — which controls heart contractions and heart rate, among other things. This could “make them more susceptible to developing TTS,” Dr. Templin says.

How do you treat broken heart syndrome?

When you have any sort of chest pain or shortness of breath, you should immediately call 911, Sara Sirna, MD, cardiologist at Loyola University Health System told ScienceDaily. These could be signs of TTS, but also could mean you’re having a heart attack.

If it is broken heart syndrome, there’s no standard treatment, notes Harvard Health Publishing. Your doctor will determine the best course of action based on the severity of the symptoms and other factors like blood pressure. Some options include aspirin, or a more intense course of heart failure medication.

The good news is it doesn’t often lead to death, according to Harvard Health Publishing. And for the most part, people who have it once don’t get it a second time, says Mayo Clinic. Although the condition improves in four to eight weeks, 20% of people with TTS do end up experiencing heart failure.

Of course, not everyone who goes through heartbreak will end up with TTS. But consider the possibility additional incentive to take good care of yourself after a breakup — emotionally and physically.

Tulle & Teen Spirit At Molly Goddard’s London Fashion Week Show

$

Frothy party frocks aside, there’s another reason showgoers look forward to Molly Goddard’s spot on the London Fashion Week schedule: She’s known for hosting the occasional feast (see the banquet from fall ’17). And for ‘fall 20, she provided the holy trifecta: wine, bread, and lashings of salted butter.

While the much-needed sustenance gave editors and influencers alike some respite from Storm Dennis, the collection itself was as much of a treat. Tulle gowns deserving of their own walk-in wardrobe were of course featured, this season in cheery daffodil yellow and punchy pillar-box red. But it was the playful move into a grungier aesthetic that stood out most.

Kurt Cobain-esque red and black knits were layered over foaming tiered skirts and paired with two-inch high creepers, while models were given greasy bangs that covered one eye to amp up the teen-spirit feel. Lindsey Wixson also starred in the show, wearing a punchy blue froufrou dress over a coral knit (complete with a supersized bow). After announcing her retirement at the age of 23 in 2017, we’re more than happy that the American model is walking her way back into our lives.

Goddard also used her fall ’20 collection to launch menswear, although it was unisex insofar as we’d wear every single piece. From zingy checked suiting and Peter Pan-collared coats to Fair Isle cardigans over crisp white shirts, whether we steal it from our boyfriends or invest in it ourselves, the pieces felt like a natural extension of the designer’s signature aesthetic.

Kendall, Irina & An All-Star Cast Steal The Show At Burberry

$

London Fashion Week fall ’20 drew to a close last night with Burberry’s blockbuster show and there was an electric atmosphere as the great and the good of the fashion, music, and film industries (think Hunter Schafer, Naomi Campbell, and FKA twigs) took their seats in the front row at the glittering event.

Burberry is always the most anticipated show of the season, but this time around saw a change in tempo for creative director Riccardo Tisci. Arguably his strongest collection for the brand thus far, it feels as though the designer has settled into his new home, allowing his creative vision to be fully realized.

Firstly, the outerwear: Burberry is known and loved for its classic trench coat, which was treated to a refresh in several ways this season with ‘70s shearling trim (very Penny Lane), with contrasting black and white lapels, and in supersize check with Peter Pan collars that felt less heritage and more experimental. It was even given the Frankenstein hybrid treatment when fused with a puffer jacket

Away from the trench style, boxy beige cropped jackets felt the most contemporary, while the oil-slick, high-shine vinyl will be a sellout and the quilted form-fitting jackets will appeal to the brand’s more conservative customer. Elsewhere, rugby stripes were given a fresh new spin in egg-yolk yellow and candyfloss pink across shirts and dresses, while cricket jumpers were layered over sequined floor-skimming gowns. We also have a soft spot for a standout olive-green trouser suit, which was paired with a white and rust-colored shirt.

Sibling pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque provided the music, their synchronized crescendos matching the collection’s pulsing energy. An all-star cast of models walked the show, too, from Bella and Gigi Hadid to Joan Smalls, Kendall Jenner, and Irina Shayk. Burberry also debuted the latest installment of its B Series handbags at the show. The Robin, a small black structured bag in Italian-tanned leather, complete with Tisci’s now-cult gold Thomas Burberry Monogram clasp, enjoyed its first outing on the fall ’20 catwalk last night, though hints of the cross-body bag were dropped on the house’s social media platforms yesterday morning.

Riccardo Tisci’s fall ’20 collection — his fourth for the luxury British giant — proved that while his vision is far removed from that of his predecessor, Christopher Bailey, his ability to imbue the brand with sexiness, streetwear, and innovation is taking it to stratospheric new heights.

Nylon Travel Bag

Kristina

How She Discovered It: "I was browsing Amazon for an affordable, practical, and (most importantly) not-ugly travel bag. I'm taking a lot more trips for work now, and needed something that could fit a lot of items, withstand some heavy use, and not make me feel like a thru-hiker or grandma."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "It's a perfect size and can hold a deceiving amount of things. On a recent business trip, I fit: my 13" laptop and charging cable, small Moleskine notebook, lots of pens/markers, phone charger, Kindle, 2 tissue packs, makeup bag, hard sunglasses case, wallet, phone, Camelbak water bottle, beanie, with a scarf knotted onto the strap, all with no bulging pockets or overflowing compartments. I like it because it has a bunch of little zipper compartments to help you organize everything (like a good travel bag should) but also is modern enough in its style that you wouldn't peg it as a "travel purse" right off the bat. The soft nylon material, boxy silhouette, and woven fabric cross-body strap put it somewhere aesthetically between a Baggu Cloud Bag and a classic Le SportSac. I've had it for almost 2 years and it still looks new."

ZOOEASS Waterproof Nylon Travel Messenger Bag (Green), $, available at Amazon

Seamless Cotton Scrunchies

Jane

How She Discovered It: "My hairdresser first gave me one because she said that the traditional hair ties broke my hair because of the strong elastic in them — so I thought I would make my own because I couldn't find ones that were multiple colored, but realized all the fabric was too expensive. A friend suggested Amazon and I found these seamless ones and the price was great."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "It is really special to me because I am on a very tight budget and did start to realize my old elastics were breaking my hair and I was feeling bad about myself. This product and price point made me feel comfortable and better about myself and I have noticed a difference with my hair."

BETITETO 20-Pack Seamless Cotton Scrunchies (Multicolor), $, available at Amazon

Chelsea Rain Boots

Claire

How She Discovered It: "I was looking around for some rain boots because it suddenly got really rainy — and I always borrowed my mom's before I went away to school — when I stumbled on these."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "They look so cute with everything and they work really well in the rain. And they were only 20 bucks!!! Sometimes I even wear them when the weather is fine just because I like them so much!"

EYUSHIJIA Waterproof Slip-On Chelsea Rain Boots, $, available at Amazon

Wooden Nose Eyeglass Holder

Cory

How She Discovered It: "I don't remember."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "It’s really cute and the perfect size for my nightstand."

Royal Wooden Nose Eyeglass Holder, $, available at Amazon

Down Puffer Jacket

Ashleigh

How She Discovered It: "On a social media feed."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "It is the best winter coat I have ever had. It's warm enough for the cold winters and trendy enough for my hip Brooklyn neighborhood. I own the grey one and always get so many compliments on it. My first response is always 'Thanks! I got it on Amazon!'"

How She Discovered It: "I had just moved into my new house and kept seeing my wine bottles just sitting there on the counter. I really didn't think it looked organized or aesthetically pleasing so I went searching for a counter rack!"

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I love the interesting shape, the gold color (not too yellow) and that it fits a good amount of bottles since we are a small household we don't always have a ton of bottles to put away."

Nido Metal Tabletop 9 Bottle Wine Rack, $, available at Amazon

TSLA High-Rise Leggings

Wendy

How She Discovered It: "Looking through Amazon for yoga pants and it had great reviews."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I took a year off from work to try to get my life back in order. Part of that process was becoming a certified yoga teacher. Teaching yoga pays next to nothing and I was looking for yoga pants that fit well, felt good, didn't stretch out right away and didn't cost me a fortune. I stumbled on these: $14 for a pair of yoga pants that I wear several times a week, wash over and over and they still keep their shape, aren't see-through, and look good. I went back and bought other colors, but the space-dyed charcoal are still my favorite. I get compliments on them all the time and I love that I didn't have to spend a fortune!"

TSLA High-Rise Yoga Capris With Pockets, $, available at Amazon

Lao Gan Ma Chili Sauce

Jennifer

How She Discovered It: "I saw it mentioned in the Lorem Ipsum e-newsletter a year or two ago."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "This stuff is amazing. I'm usually a fiend for spicy food, but this isn't spicy so much as it is crispy, salty, smoky heaven in a jar. Improves every savory thing it's added to, in my opinion."

Lao Gan Ma Chilisauce Xiang La Cui (Pack of 3), $, available at Amazon

Boyfriend Style Beach Coverup

Melissa

How She Discovered It: "I wanted a few cute coverup options but didn't want to spend too much money so I went to Amazon and spent some time looking around before I found this one."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "After a few years of dealing with infertility and many IVF treatments, my body and stomach are just not in a place that I'm comfortable with but traveling, especially to warm place when I can, is my escape. Because of this, I've been all about good coverups. After spending way too much on one from Free People, I started looking at Amazon to find a few I liked and this one has been my favorite. I first purchased it in white and then went back and got it in black and navy. It's loose and cool, it hangs just right and it's actually almost sexy in that "borrowed from the boys" oversized shirt style. Highly recommend if you're looking for a coverup that doesn't have pom-poms and ruffles etc which is not really my vibe.

Ekouaer Boyfriend Beach Shirt, $, available at Amazon

Epilator Facial Hair Remover

Alexandra

How She Discovered It: "Desperate to find a solution for removing rogue facial hair — and tired of paying the price for professional hair removal — I found this gem late one night while searching Amazon."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "Let's be frank, every girl I know struggles with facial hair removal: from full-blown mustaches to the one-off chin hair we're all waxing, tweezing, laser-ing unwanted hair from our faces. My face, in particular, is covered in peach fuzz and the occasional whisker (or five). With hair too blonde to be lasered and too sensitive for waxing, my only option was threading…I was tired of spending money on threading, so I searched Amazon for a solution. I came upon my hidden gem: the Facial Hair Removal Epilator. The epilator is a little wand with a metal spring that you roll over the areas where you want to remove hair. It takes a few uses to get the hang of the technique, but once you do…. voila! At $8.39 it's the best beauty investment I have ever made. I roll it over my chin quickly each morning after brushing my teeth to remove any unsightly hairs that may have sprung up overnight. I have recommended it to my mom and to all of my friends and everyone loves this incredible find from Amazon."

MAZU Facial Hair Removal Epilator, $, available at Amazon

Plus-Size Pleather Peplum Top

Jessica

How She Discovered It: "I did a google search. Since we have prime, I figured if it didn’t fit, I could return it easily. "

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "My hidden gem is a plus size pleather peplum top. I ordered it for my 39ish birthday party. It’s super cute and nice quality. It’s hard to find good quality, trendy plus size clothing. I didn’t want to spend a lot of cash on something I wouldn’t wear a lot. I do suggest sizing up. It’s not really special BUT it’s definitely fun! And it makes me want to search Amazon for more clothes."

Red Dot Boutique Plus-Size Pleather Peplum Top, $, available at Amazon

Leather Travel Jewelry Case

Caitlin

How She Discovered It: "I was browsing for a travel jewelry case, and wanted something that could carry enough to last through a two-week vacation but also would be small enough to fit in a carry-on bag."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I think this is the best jewelry case I've seen because it has space to fit any kind of necklace, bracelet, earring, or ring, is stylish, and can fit easily in a carry-on because of its slim design. Also, compared to other similar organizers, this one clocks in under $40, which made it perfect for my price range. I'd obviously rather spend my money booking another trip than on a designer jewelry case. "

CASE ELEGANCE Saffiano Leather Travel Jewelry Case, $, available at Amazon

Velvet Tufted Headboard

Rebecca

How She Discovered It: "I really wanted an Anthropologie channel tufted bed when I moved into my first apartment, but I also wanted to stay within my budget so I tried to find a similar look elsewhere. I looked at several home furniture sites until I decided to give Amazon a go. I found this adjustable headboard right away and it looks just as good as the $700+ ones I had wanted earlier."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "There were so many cute color options, it was easy to attach to my bed, it's very sturdy, and I got the look I wanted for my room for a really great price."

eufy RoboVac

Jenny

How She Discovered It: "I've always wanted an iRobot vacuum, but could never justify paying the full price of $500+. I kept my eye out for Black Friday, Cyber Monday deals but even with those promos, the thing was ~$400. During that time, I kept seeing this eufy vacuum pop up. I had never heard about the brand before, but it was a best-seller, had amazing reviews, and Amazon recommended, which made me feel confident that the thing wouldn't break after a few uses. There was also a Cyber Monday promo going on so I took a leap of faith and purchased it for around $190."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "Since I bought this thing, my live-in boyfriend of 4 years and I haven't had a single argument about who has to vacuum! We have very different levels of cleanliness so the frequency of vacuuming has always been a contention. Now we just have this scheduled to run every few days. I know money doesn't solve all your problems, but it did solve this one! For me, it was WELL worth the $190."

Maris

How She Discovered It: "Google research."

During my research, I found a nail lotion called Hard As Hoof with thousands of 5-star ratings so I decided to give it a try. And I am so glad I did! The lotion itself smells great and has tons of natural ingredients and my nails look amazing week to week. They have grown as never before and rarely chip or break. You can massage the lotion onto your nails even when you have nail polish on. Hard as Hoof lotion will always be part of my nail care routine!"

How She Discovered It: "I wanted a padded headband but wasn't sure about committing to the trend so I didn't want to spend too much."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "It took a moment to get it — maybe about two weeks — so I was relieved when it came. In the end, it was exactly what I wanted. It was good quality and packaged nicely and even came with a note from the seller. I have a smaller head and it fits perfectly atop. It's exactly the look I was going for!"

Dotted-Grid Notebook

Brianna

How She Discovered It: "I was taking a free LinkedIn class on graphic design (I help friends/family with logos in my spare time), and the instructor stated that although you are creating images on various websites or software applications, drawing/sketching by hand is key. He recommended a dotted journal that you can carry around with you, so I hit Amazon to find my journal!"

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "My journal is special to me because not only am I using it to build up my portfolio, I use it if I need an escape from my day-to-day. Drawing/sketching relaxes and centers me. I carry my journal along with me all day, every day just in case I get a great idea and need to come back to it later, or whenever I get past my writers/artist block."

UrSunshine Dotted Grid Notebook/Journal, $, available at Amazon

Mike's Hot Honey Subscription

Andy

How She Discovered It: "I've been eating this for years but I think I first discovered it at Paulie Gee's pizza because they drizzle it on the pizza and it's like insanely delicious. Actually I had no idea until I looked it up for this answer that Mike of Mike's Hot Honey worked at Paulie Gee's and that's where he got started??? I never knew/thought about this!"

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "It's not really hidden since it's a pretty well known and liked product but this is the very first item I have ever opted to use Amazon's 'subscribe & save' feature for. It saves me about a dollar and have it delivered every two months. I use this honey in tea and put it on food and ice cream because I love it so much so I run out about every month or so and it happens to be cheaper on Amazon than anywhere else and I've never had any issues getting a weird or outdated bottle since it comes directly from Mike's Hot Honey."

Mammoth Lint Roller

Libby

How She Discovered It: "Hilary Rhoda's Instagram (her husband is a neat-freak)."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I mean, it's a giant lint roller! Enough said! It's especially helpful on my cowhide rug (vs. dealing with it getting sucked into vacuum) and it takes half the time to de-lint my coats/sweaters. I love it so much — by far my favorite Amazon purchase!"

Mammoth Extra Large Lint Roller, 2 Rollers and 2 Refills, $, available at Amazon

Organic Cotton Maxi Pads

Andrea

How She Discovered It: "I went to Amazon and typed in, 'organic cotton maxi pads,' and voila."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I wanted organic cotton pads that don't have any scent or extra chemicals. I also think they're more comfortable than that sort of plastic-y texture that can give me a rash and just be plain gross. These are 100% organic, USDA-certified, non-GMO, and made in the USA without the use of toxins, pesticides, or synthetic chemicals. Also, I know I am a grown woman and like, who gives an F, but there is something appealing about getting a package of maxi pads delivered discreetly to your door than carrying it home in a flimsy see-through bag. Now that I know I like these, I ordered an economy pack so I don't have to worry about it for a while."

Rael Certified Organic Cotton Ultra Thin Pads with Wings (28, $, available at Amazon

Exlura Off-The-Shoulder Loose Knit Sweater, $, available at Amazon

HDTV Digital Antenna

Lauren

How She Discovered It:
"Many of my millennial friends have been looking for ways to 'cut the cord' when it comes to cable. I was researching all different streaming services for live streaming cable channels. When adding up the costs plus the internet, we were coming out only a few dollars cheaper than having an actual cable box. The best thing I found was the HDTV Antenna. My dad had one in his garage and said he gets upwards of 60 channels. When I was looking on Amazon, this one had some of the best reviews and I purchased on a lightning deal for $21!"

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "We get 70 channels with this antenna. And all the channels are 4k quality clear. We really only wanted the major networks to be able to keep up with news and sports. I think most people still think antenna equals big ugly bunny ears on the top of your tv. This antenna is paper-thin, and we hung it up right behind our TV so you can't even see it.
The other reason I think this is a special hidden gem is it's a one time purchase of $21 and we get more channels then we need, compared to paying $40+ per/mo for streaming. I believe if more people know about these new high tech antennas they would be saving a ton of money every month!"

HDS HDTV Digital Antenna 4K 1080p, $, available at Amazon

How She Discovered It: "Searching for an affordable replacement for the trendy overpriced version that kept targeting me on Instagram..."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "This fleece is slouchy chic with just the right amount of 'I borrowed it from my boyfriend' edge. Why It's A Hidden Gem: "Under $2 a sponge vs $20 for the beauty blender and I like it better! I went back to the beauty blender for a day when I ran out of these sponges and I didn’t like it anymore! I’m never spending $20 on a sponge again!"

No Sebum Mineral Powder

April

How She Discovered It: "I read about it on a website about products that help with oily skin."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "It's one of the best products I have ever used. I've struggled with acne since I was 12. Now that I'm older, I've been trying to find products to help control it and the oiliness. I use acne medication, a good moisturizer, and then this on top. It keeps my skin so soft and helps with the oil perfectly. I can't recommend it enough!"

How She Discovered It: "List of ideas for personalized gifts."

All-Day Liquid Eyeliner

Karina

How She Discovered It: "Before I started working in beauty, I heavily researched every makeup purchase I made, whether I was shopping at the drugstore or Sephora. This Maybelline liquid eyeliner pen was one of my earlier purchases, but years later, I keep coming back to it because it's just that good. Plus, if I ever forgot to pack my eyeliner when traveling, I'll always know it's a solid pick for an emergency shopping trip."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "It can be intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it, a felt-tip liquid eyeliner is like the little black dress of beauty products. It makes a chic, clean statement worn by itself, but also compliments virtually any eyeshadow look you're going for. And as the name aptly points out, the tip is super precise, which allows me to create a barely-there wing or go more dramatic with the shape. In other words, it's the perfect drugstore liquid eyeliner."

Maybelline Eyestudio Master Precise All Day Liquid Eyeliner, $, available at Amazon

Black High-Waist Leggings

Casey

How She Discovered It: "Trial and error plus lots of Amazon comments section trolling."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "This pair of leggings passes the see-through squat test in flying colors. No underwear showing here! They are super matte and on the thicker side which I like. I also like how high they are on the waist for indoor cycling so everything stays comfortably in place. Bonus: lots of pockets which is a take it or leave it for me personally but a bonus for runners etc."

ODODOS High-Waist Leggings With Pockets, $, available at Amazon

Diamond Wedding Ring

Kristyn

How She Discovered It: "So this is a similar style ring - I can't find my exact ring. But, it was given to me on Christmas eve when I got engaged :) My main stone is 1.6 ctw "very good" quality diamond and I think was around 4k he never told me the exact amount."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "My husband and I both really enjoy deal shopping — it's one of our pastimes haha so he knew I'd have no issues with him getting a great deal on my ring — I just wanted to be married! It's an antique-style setting and really fits my style so I immediately fell in love with it. Once we got it appraised it was valued at a lot more than he paid — like 7k more! It came with an appraisal certificate that was already more than he paid but we took it to a reputable jeweler who went NUTS for it and appraised it even higher. Jewelers especially often ask me if its a family heirloom because they say it's beautifully crafted. I love it so much i choose to wear it on my right hand because I don't want a band taking any attention away from the details on the sides."

Houston Diamond District Princess Cut 14K White Gold Prong-Set Diamond Ring, $, available at Amazon

Countertop Oven

Donna

How She Discovered It: "Youtube."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "We purchased this when we got rid of our microwave. The many features this machine has rocks — and even though we typically only use a handful of them, they all work very well; the toast settings are super accurate and it has an awesome Rotisserie part so I can slow roast chicken. The only thing I miss about our old microwave is how quickly I could heat things up, but the pro of my food tasting better way outweighs that con. I highly recommend and love love love it!"

ConvectionWorks Hi-Q Intelligent Countertop Oven Set, $, available at Amazon

Avarelle Acne Absorbing Cover Patch

Katie

How She Discovered It: "Surfing Amazon's indie-beauty scene."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "As one reviewer said it best, these little patches are 'miracle workers.' I'm a believer."

Terra Ties Biodegradable Hair Elastics

Courtney

How She Discovered It: "Heard about them from a friend who works in beauty!"

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "As someone who is constantly losing hair ties — seriously, where do they go?! — the thought of them collecting dust somewhere keeps me up at night. Enter: Terra Ties. They look and feel just like the drugstore black elastics you know, love, and seriously can’t keep misplacing, but are made of an entirely biodegradable blend of organic cotton and natural rubber. Even better, they don’t leave weird bends or creases in your hair, and the paperboard they arrive packaged in is also compostable. Freaking. Genius."

Cat-Eye Sunglasses

Marissa

How She Discovered It: "In a Refinery29 story that I researched and wrote. Hi, hello, yes, I work here."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I have finally accepted that I'm a serial loser of sunglasses. After my favorite pair of Céline sunnies — that I owned all of one (!) year — disappeared into thin air, I said, never again. No longer will I spend money on an item that I can't trust myself to keep track of even if said item is perched on my head. These cat-eye sunnies are cheap and light. The lens quality is meh but they are so cute and fit every face that tries them on — even my own little head, as exhibited in this selfie with Amazon shades. If/when I lose these sunglasses I will buy another pair and feel good that the person who finds them will hopefully enjoy them too.

YOSHYA Retro Cat-Eye Sunglasses (Pack of 2), $, available at Amazon

100% Bamboo Shelf

Angelina

How She Discovered It: "I was searching for furniture that would help maximize the space in my tiny (and I mean really tiny) room in NYC."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I had a really odd indent in my room that created an extra 14 x 14 corner (if that makes sense) and I wanted to make the most of it! I couldn't find anything that was the correct dimensions and basically scoured all over until I found this standing storage rack. I know it says it's a bathroom rack but I think it looks pretty cute in a bedroom AND it was extremely easy to put together."

SONGMICS 100% Bamboo 4-Tier Shelf, $, available at Amazon

Chloven Velvet Hair Scrunchies (45-Pc Set), $, available at Amazon

Colossus Duffle Bag

Nina

How She Discovered It: "While I was browsing Amazon for a new gym bag."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "While this huge duffle bag is definitely WAY too big for the gym, something about its massive size and military-like design really spoke to me. It was also on sale, so I took a chance. The epic size was actually kind of perfect and allowed me to overpack just enough on a recent trip to Europe, where a variety of outfit changes was very crucial. Highly recommend!"

Condor Colossus Duffle Bag, $, available at Amazon

Reusable Bamboo Cotton Pads

Jessica

How She Discovered It: "I was looking for reusable pads that I could swap out my cotton rounds with (I'm very picky about cotton rounds — the ones I got from the drugstore always left random strands of cotton on my face!) So I googled and found these. At first, I ended up with ones that were nursing pads, but these are smaller and softer, IMO. "

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I use these every day — sometimes two! They're great for taking off makeup with makeup remover, a quick cleanse with micellar water, or applying toner. I just toss them in a delicates bag and wash them with the rest of my laundry."

Wegreeco Reusable Bamboo Makeup Remover Pads, $, available at Amazon

Cable-Twist Boyfriend Cardigan

Maddie

How She Discovered It: "Cruising the web for an under-$50, top-rated slouchy sweater I could wear with and layer over just about anything."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "The quality of this sweater is surprisingly high for the low price. Plus, it feels more unique than picking up this season's version from Zara or H&M along with everyone else. It's kinda like my grandma made it or my mom wore...but chic."

Missha Aqua Sun Gel SPF 50

Serena

How She Discovered It: "My coworker gave me her 12 step skincare routine and this is by far one of my favorite recommendations."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I used to associate SPF with sticky, slimy and something that would clog my pores. But leaving the house without SPF on my face makes me feel like having intercourse without a condom. UNPROTECTED. This sunscreen feels almost like a serum that sinks right into the skin and doesn't smell like I just made out with a lifeguard."

Missha All-Around Safe Block Aqua Sun Gel, SPF 50, $, available at Amazon

Madeline

How She Discovered It: "My secret vice: the #founditonamazon hashtag."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "It’s the perfect transitional dress, and obviously meant to be worn solo during the warmer months. When the temperature starts to drop, I’ll layer it over a turtleneck and jeans — the print isn’t too summery, so it won’t look out of season."

How She Discovered It: "Through R29's Instagram-like handbag story!"

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I feel like the best Amazon finds are pieces that don't try and do too much, and this minimalist tote is a perfect example of that. I get so many compliments on how elegant it looks and no one can ever believe it's a faux leather bag that I snagged for under $20."

How She Discovered It: "I was looking for something on-trend and unique to display my many rings. Something that was also stylish and looks good on my vanity."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "This is one of those items that you didn't know you needed until you had one. I absolutely love that its made of solid marble. It feels good to hold and is an affordable way to add some marble accent to my home. I use it every day to hold my engagement ring when I'm not wearing it. Volume & Curl Super Waterproof Mascara

Sarah

How She Discovered It: "Japanese makeup and skincare top 10 lists on a whole bunch of different makeup blogs I follow all gave this particular brand glowing reviews, so I had to check it out."

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I have a fraught history with mascara, especially waterproof formulas. Drugstore mascara wands get gunky really fast and don't give me an even application. Higher-end brands aren't much better, plus they're exorbitantly expensive. Mascara removal sucks too. Those Almay pads people swear by? That Lancome formula? They're both oily as hell and I end up having to rub pretty hard to get my eye makeup off. BUT! This Heroine Make stuff? It comes off with a swipe of Pond's and lasts all day. The price is right, too. Bless up."

Heroine Make Volume & Curl Super Waterproof Mascara, $, available at Amazon

Why It's A Hidden Gem: "I was looking for a dandruff solution when I came upon this gem. Every time I wash my hair and use this brush my scalp feels so clean, and it does a better job than my fingers ever will, plus it’s helped remove my dandruff almost to nothing. I truly appreciate this product."

It looks very high-quality IRL!"
