It looks like Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris have decided to consciously uncouple. Breakups aren't fun, even if you're in a position to distract yourself by calling a bunch of supermodels over to play chess using Grammys as pieces. But once Swift watches the appropriate number of Grey's Anatomy episodes to recover, she might realize that being single is for the best. It could usher in a new era of her music. It'll give her more free time. When she's ready, she can move on to an even better relationship.
And, as a general PSA, I think Swifties and non-Swift fans alike can agree "bitter single lady with cats" jokes are beneath us all. Women of all romantic inclinations have feelings about cats. And even if Swift decided to stay single forever and ever, she'd still be an incredibly accomplished musician whose Instagram game is always on point.
In case Swift has any doubts about the merits of her new single status, here are several reasons I for one am excited.
It's time for her to make single girl power anthems.
Swift is a master of the breakup track. And her starry-eyed love songs carried many of us through college. But Swift is older now, and wiser; her fans need a song that doesn't ask us to shake anything off, but recognizes that being single can be an exciting, totally voluntary state.
I was already (vaguely) nostalgic for breakup Swift.
"We Are Never Getting Back Together" is kind of a great song. And it seems like this could be the year we get songs of the summer that weren't produced in 2016. Let Swift's romantic misfortune inspire your beach playlist.
She'll have more time to devote to her bestie army.
Having a significant other is great, but maintaining a relationship can really suck time away from onesie pizza parties and BFF breakfasts. Who knows? She might even look to expand her girlfriend circle, slightly increasing the odds that you'll get an invite to a sleepover.
Calvin Harris was never going to be Mr. Swift.
When most people say "one year down," they're usually talking about school or some other commitment they're eager to put behind them. Plus, he was allergic to Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson. It just wasn't meant to be.
